Fungal keratitis

We present a case of fungal keratitis caused by Scedosporium apiospermum, which is a rare agent. Case description A 34-year-old Caucasian male patient was admitted to our clinic with complaints of pain and blurred vision in the left eye. The patient had a history of wearing contact lenses for 3 years.

The research was done to isolate the common fungal agent involved in mycotic keratitis attending tertiary care hospital. The purpose of isolating the organisms is for the early diagnosis and treatment of the patients. The research lead to the finding that, Corneal trauma was the most common predisposing factor in the pathogenesis of mycotic keratitis, which was mostly seen in farmers i.e, agriculturists who are in the actively working age group.

Fungal keratitis is a major ophthalmic problem. In view of the importance in timely diagnosis and treatment of keratitis which would otherwise lead to serious complications like loss of vision, hypopyon formation, endopthalamitis, etc., this study was intended to bring into light the fungal etiological agents in suppurative keratitis. The specimen was collected from suppurative keratitis cases irrespective of prior antibiotic treatment during the period of one year from March 2012 to February 2013.

The aim of this study is to isolate and identify the various organisms from cases of infective keratitis obtained from the department of ophthalmology in our college. Ninety six numbers of cases were included in this study, in the duration period of 18 months i.e. from January 2015 to June 2016. Keratitis is the inflammation of the cornea. Fungi are the most common etiological agents which account for 30–40% of the cases whereas bacteria account for 13–48% of all cases of suppurative keratitis; this varies by geographical area1 . The eye may be infected from external sources or through intraocular invasion of microorganisms carried by the blood stream. The common eye infections caused by bacterial and fungal pathogens are blepharitis, conjunctivitis, internal and external hordeolum, keratitis, dacryocystitis. Timely institution of appropriate therapy must be initiated to control the infections and thereby minimize the ocular morbidity.
