Lichens, formed by the symbiosis of fungi and algae or cyanobacteria, are increasingly recognized for their potential medicinal properties, including their potential to treat type 2 diabetes. Many studies have shown that the bioactive metabolites of lichens originate from their fungal partners. This study isolated the mycobiont from a Graphis lichen sample and investigated the antioxidant and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of its ethyl acetate extract.

In chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) several diseases are caused from fungal, bacterial and viral origin. Among the fungal diseases, damping off caused by species of Pythium is very common in the nursery which causes about 90 per cent mortality in nurseries and fields. Present experiment was carried out in in-vitro and in-situ conditions at Department of Plant Pathology, SHUATS in Completely Randomized Design with eight treatments and three replications each.

Ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptides (RiPPs) are a highly diverse group of secondary metabolites (SM) of bacterial and fungal origin. While RiPPs have been intensively studied in bacteria, little is known about fungal RiPPs. In Fungi only six classes of RiPPs are described.

Airways of lung cancer patients are often colonized by fungi. Some of these colonizing fungi, under particular conditions, produce cancerogenic mycotoxins. Given the recent interest in the infective origin of lung cancer, with this preliminary study we aim to give our small contribution to this field of research by analysing the fungal microbiome of the exhaled breath condensate of lung cancer patients from Puglia, a region of Italy.

Collar rot (Sclerotium rolfsii Sacc.) of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) is one of the devastating soil-borne diseases of fungal origin, due to which 16–80% yield loss is recorded annually according to the severity of the disease. An integrated disease management approach was developed for the management of collar rot of chilli using fungicide, biocontrol agents and an organic amendment.

Aspergillus oryzae, a safe filamentous fungus, is widely used in food and enzyme production. In this study, we examined a cultivation model using rice husks as carrier to assess the capacity of recombinant protein production in A. oryzae. The model was first tested with the A. oryzae strain expressing the DsRed reporter gene. The expression of DsRed was easily detected by the pink color of the fungal mycelium on culture media and under a fluorescence microscope. The model was then evaluated with the phyA gene encoding a phytase from the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus.

A simple, rapid, safe and cost effective DNA extraction method is an all time need for efficient molecular screening of fungus using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A number of protocols are now available to suit recovery of DNA from different fungi. But, only a few are universally used for all fungal origin. In this pursuit, the authors presented a detailed review of the status of fungal DNA isolation using different methods.

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) is one of the world’s most important cash crop cultivated in more than 80 countries around the globe. There are several impediments which contribute to low cane yield and one of the factors is plant diseases. The crop is mostly constrained by diseases of fungal, bacterial and viral origin. Bacterial Red stripe/top rot incited by Acidovorax avenae subsp. Avenae once considered to be the minor disease is gaining importance these days. The disease mostly occurs in two forms i.e.

During storage, peanut seeds face many problems including deterioration that creates favorable conditions for mold growth and mycotoxin production. This study describes the diversity of molds responsible for groundnut rot during commercialized in the city markets of Douala-Cameroon. Peanut samples were collected in a ten markets in the city of Douala. It has been noted that the postharvest fungal flora of groundnuts in the city of Douala is composed of various genre of molds.

Rice (OryzasativaL.) is an important cereal crop belonging to the family Poaceae and has two cultivated and 22 wild species. The cultivated species are Oryza sativa and Oryzaglaberrima. Oryza sativa is grown all over the world. Rice is known to suffer from number of diseases caused by fungal, bacterial and viral origins. Identification of resistant genotypes is again an essential continuous process either to recommend for cultivation in endemic area or to use as donors of the resistant genes.

In a review of their own research the authors summarize incidences and distributions of the most important fungal diseases in Ethiopia and progress in breeding for resistance. Ethiopia, as the centre of origin for Coffea arabica, hosts a large diversity of germplasm. The incidences of diseases are based on observations in the montane rainforests of the southeast (Harenna) and southwest (Bonga, Berhane-Kontir, Yayu) of Ethiopia.

Neurological complications after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation(HSCT)are frequently life-threatening, and their clinical management can be highly challenging. In the case of central nervous system lesions post-HSCT, a definitive diagnosis is often difficult to reach because many different causative and contributing conditions may be present, including bacterial, fungal, or viral infections; original disease relapse; and post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder(PTLD).

Natural bioactive compounds have been found superior to chemical compounds for use in pharmaceutical applications. Such natural compounds include biologically active compounds present as a part of fungal metabolism that originate through different biochemical pathways and contain different structural groups like benzopyranones, phenols, toxins, and steroids.

A gene encoding β-(1,3-1,4)-glucanase (licA) was amplified from Orpinomyces sp. GMLF18 and expressed in Escherichia coli. The DNA sequence of licA showed that the gene was 707 bp and encoded a protein with a molecular mass of 26 kDa that belongs to family glycosyl hydrolase 16.

One of the main problems when analysing the impact of remittances on development is the lack of full and reliable information on the volume, destination and use of this economic flow. The lack of information also limits the proposals for action that can be made by the Public Administration. Hence, we should start by improving data collection systems on remittances. On the one hand, we need to have a more precise image of the proportion of their savings that immigrants are sending to their countries of origin and analyse the factors that influence the frequency and volume...

This unit describes some of the ways that a laboratory can deal with the constant threat of microbial contamination in cell cultures. Microorganisms are ubiquitous. Bacteria can be isolated from nearly any surface including inanimate objects and human skin. Fungal spores and bits of vegetative hyphae drift into a laboratory from air conditioning ducts and open doors. Mycoplasma infections most frequently originate from improperly sterilized media or serum.
