The improvement of any crop mainly depends upon the nature and magnitude of genetic variability present in the base population. The objective of this study was to assess the genetic diversity and relationship among the G. hirsutum genotypes using multivariate Mahalanobis D2 statistics. Forty G. hirsutum genotypes of diverse origin were utilized in this study.

The present study was conducted to find out the Fiber quality traits under different environments quality in three varieties H 1098 – I, H 1300 and H 1316 under six environments (three sowing periods i.e. early, normal and late sown conditions in year 2015 & 2016). Observations were recorded for four fiber quality traits viz. 2.5% span length (mm), fiber strength (g/tex), micronaire value (μg/inch) and fiber uniformity (%). Fiber length ranges from 25.2- 27.9 UI ranges from 81- 82.3. Strength ranges from 25.2- 29.6. Micronaire value ranges from 4.5 - 4.9.

The formation of natural colored fibers mainly results from the accumulation of different anthocyanidins and their derivatives in the fibers of Gossypium hirsutum L. Chalcone synthase (CHS) is the first committed enzyme of flavonoid biosynthesis, and anthocyanidins are transported into fiber cells after biosynthesis mainly by Anthocyanidin reductase (ANR) and Leucoanthocyanidin reductase (LAR) to present diverse colors with distinct stability.

The present study comprised of three male sterile CMS lines, three maintainer lines and ten male fertile males (testers/ restorers) with three standard checks in two sets i.e. CMS and conventional thus making 60 F1s (30 CMS and 30 conventional) using Line x Tester mating design. The crosses, CAK 53A x AKH- 07R, CAK 23B x AKH-07R, CAK 23B x DHy286-1R, CAK 23B x R-2000-23 and SRT-1A x R-2000-26 were found better for seed cotton yield per plant and hold promise for further evaluation and commercial exploitation of heterosis both in CMS and conventional system for high yield.

A study of heterosis over checks was carried out with 24 Gosypium hirsutum entries comprising of 14 F1s produced by CMS method, 7 females and 2 males and 1 check were evaluated at three locations viz., Surat, Bharuch and Hansot. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block design (RBD) with three replications. CMS based crosses heterosis over standard check ranged from -39.17 to 9.36 per cent. Three crosses viz., G(B) 20 x G.Cot.10, G(B) 20 x DHY-286-1 and LRK-516 x DHY-286-1 performed better for standard heterosis, where their SCA effects were also significantly higher.

Present study was investigated to elucidate the role of antioxidative enzymes in imarting resistance to sucking pest attack. Antioxidative enzymes viz. SOD, CAT, POX, GR and APX were estimated in the leaves (2nd leaf & 6th leaf) of cotton genotypes infected by sucking pests at 50, 60 and 68 days after sowing (DAS) stage. The antioxidative enzyme activity before infection was maximum in 2nd & 6 th leaves of G. arboreum genotypes followed by G. hirsutum resistant genotypes and minimum in G. hirsutum susceptible genotypes.

The present investigation was to study the molecular diversity of twelve cotton genotypes, in order to select the suitable divergent parent for heterosis breeding. Totally, 55 primers were used to diversify these genotypes and 40 pairs showed clear, scorable and unambiguous bands. Out of 40, 25 primer pairs (62.55 %) were found to be polymorphic and 15 found to be monomorphic. The average number of alleles per locus was 1.8. The similarity coefficient ranged from 0.56 to 1.00 with high dissimilarity coefficient of 0.44 for the genotypes TCH 1777 with MCU 13 and TSH 0499 with SVPR 4.

Cotton, Recombinant inbred lines (RIL), phenotypic (PCV) and There is a limited genetic variability available in genetic resources of upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), which restricted the breeding activity. The objective of present study was evaluating the genetic variability in RIL population derived through intraspecific hybridization between RHAP 12 and RHAP 15 genotypes. The 222 RIL were evaluated during kharif 2018 at University of Agricultural Sciences Dharwad.

The working group of G. hirsutum germplasm accessions was characterized for Distinctiveness, Uniformity and Stability testing. Subsequent analysis of data was done to study the genetic diversity available among the accessions using principal component and clustering of 320 cotton germplasm. Under field and laboratory, 26 qualitative traits and 14 quantitative traits were recorded. There is no variation observed for gossypol glands, anther filament colour, male sterility, boll bearing habit and boll opening.
