Leucine-rich pentatricopeptide repeat containing (LRPPRC) is a potential oncogene in multiple tumor types, including lung adenocarcinoma, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and gastric cancer. LRPPRC exerts its tumor-promoting effects mainly by regulating mitochondrial homeostasis and inducing oxidative stress.

Our previous work showed that KRAS activation in gastric cancer cells leads to activation of an epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) program and generation of cancer stem-like cells (CSCs). Here we analyze how this KRAS activation in gastric CSCs promotes tumor angiogenesis and metastasis.

Leucine-rich repeat-containing G-protein-coupled receptor 5 (LGR5) is an important cancer stem cell marker in gastric cancer. However, no detailed studies are available on LGR5 expression in poorly differentiated gastric adenocarcinoma (PD-AC).

Leucine-rich repeat-containing G-protein-coupled receptor 5 (LGR5), a component of the Wnt receptor complex, is thought to lineage label gastric and intestinal stem cells. LGR5 expression is increased in colorectal carcinoma (CRC) compared to normal tissue.

LncRNA WT1-AS is a recently identified potential tumor suppressor in gastric cancer. This study mainly explored the role of WT1-AS in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Therefore, WT1-AS over-expression may inhibit non-small cell lung cancer cell stemness by downregulating TGF-β1.

Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1 family member A1 (ALDH1A1) is a cancer stem cell marker, and its expression correlates with prognosis in a number of malignancies. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship of ALDH1A1 expression with clinicopathological parameters and prognosis in gastric cancer.

Gastric/gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) adenocarcinomas are heterogeneous, comprising four molecularly distinct subtypes, namely EBV-positive, microsatellite instability (MSI), chromosomal instability (CIN) and genomically stable (GS) subtypes, and a part of this heterogeneity may hypothesized to be different cells-of-origin.

Emerging evidence indicates that inappropriate cell-cell fusion might contribute to cancer progression. Similarly, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can also fuse with other cells spontaneously and capable of adopting the phenotype of other cells. The aim of our study was to investigate the role of MSCs participated cell fusion in the tumorigenesis of gastric cancer.

Extra-capsular growth (ECG) describes the extension of neoplastic cells beyond the lymph node capsule. Aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic value of ECG and its association with a stem cell like phenotype indicated by expression of the transcription factor SOX9 in gastric cancer.

The CD133 transmembrane protein is a well-recognized stem cell marker that has been used to isolate putative cancer stem cell populations from gastric cancers (GCs). However, the molecular features or biomarkers underlying CD133 are largely unknown in GCs.

We aimed to analyze the in vitro and in vivo effects of miRNA-19b/20a/92a on gastric cancer stem cells (GCSCs) and the related mechanism. GCSCs were cultured until adherence and differentiation, and subjected to miRNA microarray analysis to find and to verify miRNA deletion. Cells stably expressing lentivirus carrying miRNA-19b/20a/92a were constructed by transfection.

The result showed that only 6% single cancer cells developed into tumorspheres during culture process. Then, flow cytometry and immunofluorescence analysis was carried out to evaluate the expression of CSC markers CD44 and ALDH in samples taken from tumorspheres which arose from gastric CSCs. The results showed that gastric CSCs formed tumorspheres in 3D culture condition with a high expression of 92% and 40,1% for markers CD44 and ALDH, respectively.

In a study of potential bone marrow transplant recipients, patients reported an improved outlook on life, enhanced relationships, and greater satisfaction with religious concerns (Andrykowski et al., 1993). The authors note that cancer should not be viewed as a homo- geneously negative event, but as a “psychosocial transition, i.e. an event with significant negative implications that can nevertheless cause individuals to restructure their attitudes, values, and behaviors, and thus can serve to trigger positive psychosocial change” (p. 274).
