  • Impairment of gastrointestinal (GI) motility is an undesirable but inevitable consequence of surgery. This prospective randomised controlled study tested the hypothesis that postoperative thoracic epidural analgesia (TEA) with ropivacaine or a combination of ropivacaine and morphine accelerates postoperative GI function and shortens the duration of postoperative ileus following major thoracic surgery compared to intravenous (IV) morphine.

  • Sepsis often accompanies gastrointestinal motility disorder that contributes to the development of sepsis in turn. Propofol and dexmedetomidine, as widely used sedatives in patients with sepsis, are likely to depress gastrointestinal peristalsis. We queried whether propofol or dexmedetomidine, at sedative doses, aggravated sepsisinduced ileus.

  • The present study was planned to evaluate the anthelmintic efficacy of crude powder (CP), crude aqueous (CAE) and crude methanolic (CME) extracts of Nicotiana tabacum leaves against common gastrointestinal nematodes of goats using three in-vitro tests viz. adult motility test (AMT), egg hatch assay (EHA) and larval paralysis test (LPT) and one invivo test using faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT). AMT was conducted against freshly collected adult Haemonchus contortus...

  • Mosapride belongs to class IV in Biopharmaceutics Classification System and is used in the treatment of reflux esophagitis. It exhibits poor bioavailability due to limited permeability, solubility and extensive first-pass metabolism. In this study, intranasal mosapride-loaded cross-linked xyloglucan Pluronic micelles (MOS-XPMs) was formulated and optimized to improve the low solubility & bioavailability of MOS. The solid dispersion technique using 23 full factorial design was applied. (MOS-XPMs) (F4) had the highest desirability value (0.

  • This issue of Gastroenterology Clinics of North America focuses on an important area in gastroenterology for both clinicians and researchers: neurogastroenterology and gastrointestinal (GI) motility disorders. GI motility and functional GI disorders are common reasons for patients to see physicians. Knowledge of GI motility disorders, including the evaluation and treatment of these disorders, is important for gastroenterologists, clinicians, and health care providers to appropriately care for these frequently seen patients in clinical practice.

  • The GIT motility constituents such as migrating motor complex in the stomach and the one way peristaltic movements in small intestine are significantly influenced by the bacterial colonization. Moreover, the decrease of intestinal motility may cause a small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).

  • Physical Features Patients with AN typically have few physical complaints but may note cold intolerance. Gastrointestinal motility is diminished, leading to reduced gastric emptying and constipation. Some women who develop AN after menarche report that their menses ceased before significant weight loss occurred. Weight and height should be measured to allow calculation of body mass index (BMI; kg/m2). Vital signs may reveal bradycardia, hypotension, and mild hypothermia. Soft, downy hair growth (lanugo) sometimes occurs, and alopecia may be seen.

  • Gastrointestinal Motor Stimulants Drugs that stimulate gastric emptying are indicated for gastroparesis (Table 39-2). Metoclopramide, a combined 5-HT4 agonist and D2 antagonist, exhibits efficacy in gastroparesis, but antidopaminergic side effects limit its use in 25% of patients. Erythromycin, a macrolide antibiotic, increases gastroduodenal motility by action on receptors for motilin, an endogenous stimulant of fasting motor activity. Intravenous erythromycin is useful for inpatients with refractory gastroparesis; however, oral forms also have some utility.
