Gellan gum biopolymer

The distinctive properties of bentonite, including hydration, swelling, water absorption, ion adsorption, high viscosity, and thixotropy make it a valuable material for many applications in geotechnical engineering such as hydraulic barriers, drilling slurry, and landfill liners. This study introduces gellan gum as a friendly environmental additive that improves bentonite slurry stability when bentonite is used for soil stabilization during excavation in emergency response.

In this study, the effect of gellan gum biopolymer on strengthening bentonite slurry was studied. In order to observe the effect of gellan gum on the bentonite strengthening effectiveness, the unconfined compression tests were conducted on gellan gum-modified bentonite with consideration of gellan gum concentration, thermal curing process.
