Ebook "Alien introgression in wheat: Cytogenetics, molecular biology, and genomics" provides an overview of the latest advancements in the field of alien introgression in wheat. The discovery and wide application of molecular genetic techniques including molecular markers, in situ hybridization, and genomics has led to a surge in interspecific and intergeneric hybridization in recent decades. The work begins with the taxonomy of cereals, especially of those species which are potential gene sources for wheat improvement.

The tertiary gene pool of bread wheat, to which Leymus racemosus belongs, has remained underutilized due to the current limited genomic resources of the species that constitute it. Continuous enrichment of public databases with useful information regarding these species is, therefore, needed to provide insights on their genome structures and aid successful utilization of their genes to develop improved wheat cultivars for effective management of environmental stresses.

Residual biomass production for fuel conversion represents a unique opportunity to avoid concerns about compromising food supply by using dedicated feedstock crops. Developing tomato varieties suitable for both food consumption and fuel conversion requires the establishment of new selection methods.

Cultivated barley belongs to the tertiary genepool of hexaploid wheat. Genes of interest can be transferred from barley into wheat through wide hybridization. The application of wheat-barley introgression lines could provide an excellent tool for the transfer of earliness, favourable amino acid composition, biotic stress resistance, abiotic stress tolerance, or good tillering ability into wheat.

Limited genetic resource in the cultivated rice may hinder further yield improvement. Some valuable genes that contribute to rice yield may be lost or lacked in the cultivated rice. Identification of the quantitative trait locus (QTL) for yield-related traits such as thousand-grain weight (TGW) from wild rice speices is desired for rice yield improvement.

Population demography and gene flow among African groups, as well as the putative archaic introgression of ancient hominins, have been poorly explored at the genome level. The present study represents an in-depth genomic analysis of a Pan African set of individuals, which emphasizes their complex relationships and demographic history at population level.

Admixture between early modern humans and Neandertals approximately 50,000–60,000 years ago has resulted in 1.5–4% Neandertal ancestry in the genomes of present-day non-Africans. Evidence is accumulating that some of these archaic alleles are advantageous for modern humans, while others are deleterious; however, the major mechanism by which these archaic alleles act has not been fully explored.

The butterfly genus Heliconius is an excellent system to study hybridization and introgression but most studies have focused on closely related species such as H. cydno and H. melpomene. Here we characterize genome-wide patterns of introgression between H. besckei, the only species with a red and yellow banded ‘postman’ wing pattern in the tiger-striped silvaniform clade, and co-mimetic H. melpomene nanna.

A group of animals that cannot interbreed with animals from another group is often taken as the definition of a ‘true’ species. However, a suite of recent studies suggests that the rare event of hybridization, that is, the production of viable offspring by the interbreeding of individuals from two such species, can facilitate adaptation through the process of genome ‘introgression’.

Gene flow between species, across ploidal levels, and even between evolutionary lineages is a common phenomenon in the genus Arabidopsis. However, apart from two genetically fully stabilized allotetraploid species that have been investigated in detail, the extent and temporal dynamics of hybridization are not well understood. Meloidogyne incognita is a devastating nematode that causes significant losses in cucumber production worldwide. Although numerous studies have emphasized on the susceptible response of plants after nematode infection, the exact regulation mechanism of M. incognita-resistance in cucumber remains elusive. Verification of an introgression line, ‘IL10–1’, with M. incognita-resistance provides the opportunity to unravel the resistance mechanism of cucumber against M. incognita.

Southern stem canker (SSC), caused by Diaporthe aspalathi (E. Jansen, Castl. & Crous), is an important soybean disease that has been responsible for severe losses in the past. The main strategy for controlling this fungus involves the introgression of resistance genes.

To elucidate features of seed development, we investigated the transcriptome of a soybean isoline from the germplasm collection that contained an introgressed allele known as minute hilum (mi) which confers a smaller hilum region where the seed attaches to the pod and also results in seed coat cracking surrounding the hilum region.

In Asia, rice is the most important, widely consumed staple food for a large part of the world's human population. Bacterial leaf blight (BB), caused by the bacterium, Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) is one of the major disease affecting Basmati rice production in India. CSR-30 is a very popular high yielding, salt tolerant Basmati variety widely grown in Haryana, India but highly susceptible to BB.

A major issue in rice production is the control of Magnaporthe oryzae, the causal agent of rice blast. K 343 being a well adapted variety in the hill zone of Jammu and Kashmir region is susceptible to blast. Present study was undertaken to introgress the broad spectrum resistance gene Pi9 through marker assisted backcross breeding in order to avoid the losses due to this fungus.

An investigation was taken up at Maize Research Station, Agricultural Research Institute, PJTSAU, Hyderabad during 2013-14. F1 material was generated by making crosses between BML 6 × CML 181 and BML 7 × CML 181for introgression of opaque 2 gene from Mexican donor CML181 through molecular breeding approach. The current study deals with the conversion of non QPM inbred lines to QPM with more than 4% lysine and 0.95% tryptophan.

Development of QPM (Quality Protein Maize) with high lysine and tryptophan is foremost important task in enhancing nutritional quality in maize through breeding programme. Marker assisted selection is the most feasible way of developing QPM hybrids in short time. The present investigation deals with conversion of elite normal maize inbred lines BML6 and BML7 (parental lines of DHM117 hybrid) into QPM lines using marker assisted selection. The nutritional quality of maize is enhanced by introgression of the opaque2 (o2) gene along with numerous modifiers for kernel hardness.

The spread of stem rust race Ug99 and variants are threat to worldwide wheat production and efforts are being made to identify and incorporate resistance. A primary source of concern at present is that Ug99 (TTKSK and its variants TTKST and TTTSK) has overcome major sources of stem rust resistance genes e.g. Sr31, Sr38 and other important gene complexes which confer resistance to stem rust. Deployment of cultivars with broad spectrum rust resistance is the only environmentally viable option to combat these diseases.
