Transposable elements (TEs) are mobile DNA sequences, colloquially known as jumping genes because of their ability to replicate to new genomic locations. TEs can jump between organisms or species when given a vector of transfer, such as a tick or virus, in a process known as horizontal transfer.

Borrelia burgdorferi is the spirochete that causes Lyme Borreliosis (LB), which is a zoonotic tick-borne disease of humans and domestic animals. Hard ticks are obligate haematophagous ectoparasites that serve as vectors of Borrelia burgdorferi. Studies on the presence of Lyme borreliosis in Egyptian animals and associated ticks are scarce.

Genetic resistance in cattle is considered a suitable way to control tick burden and its consequent losses for livestock production. Exploring tick-resistant (R) and tick-susceptible (S) hosts, we investigated the genetic mechanisms underlying the variation of Braford resistance to tick infestation.

Rhipicephalus haemaphysaloides is a prevalent multi host tick species with high vector potential in south India. There are several reports based on morphological identification of the tick species from various parts of the country. However, there were limited attempts for molecular confirmation of this tick species. In the present study, the presence of R. haemaphysaloides in Wayanad, Kerala was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction based on amplification of mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene and V4 region of 18S rRNA gene.

In tropical countries, a huge drain in profitability of animal production sector is attributed to tick and tick- borne diseases (TTBD). Traditional tick control measures are riddled by development of acaricide resistance in ticks and possibility of environmental pollution. Identifying and propagating naturally resistant breeds of cattle in endemic regions is a more efficient method in the long run. Marker assisted selection (MAS) which applies genomic information along with conventional selection in cattle breeding is a probable solution.

We document an established population of blacklegged ticks, Ixodes scapularis, on Corkscrew Island, Kenora District, Ontario, Canada. Primers of the outer surface protein A (OspA) gene, the flagellin (fla) gene, and the flagellin B (flaB) gene were used in the PCR assays to detect Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.), the Lyme disease bacterium. In all, 60 (73%) of 82 adult I. scapularis, were infected with B. burgdorferi s.l. As well, 6 (43%) of 14 unfed I. scapularis nymphs were positive for B. burgdorferi s.l. An I.

PCR targeting 16S rRNA gene integrated with sequence analysis were performed to investigate the prevalence and the molecular identity of Anaplasma phagocytophilum in Egyptian Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks attached to dogs. A total of 413 adult and nymphal R. sanguineus ticks were collected while attached to 72 free-roaming dogs from four locations (Imbaba, Boulaq, Haram, Monib) in Giza Governorate, Egypt. DNA was successfully extracted from 401 specimens (133 nymphs and 268 adults). The overall prevalence rate was 13.7% and adult ticks showed a significantly higher infection rate (16.

Ticks feed exclusively on blood to obtain their nutrients, but the gene products that mediate digestion processes in ticks remain unknown. We report the molecular characterization and possible function of a serine carboxypeptidase (HlSCP1) identified in the midgut of the hard tickHaem-aphysalis longicornis.

To be effective, risk management needs to be an ongoing and meaningful element in the management of the plan. The plan needs to do more than a ‘tick and flick’ exercise at the commencement of the project; it needs to identify who is responsible for reviewing risks on a regular basis, and how this will be done.
