Genus Lactobacillus was common probiotic key genera in gastro intestinal tracts of domestic animals as well as wild animals. The species compositions of probiotic bacteria are vary depending up on the animal species. The aim of this study was to isolate and molecular identification of genus Lactobacillus from dung samples of captive Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) reared in temples of Tamil Nadu state in India.

Accumulated poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) was determined in lactic acid bacteria belonging to the genera Lactobacillus, Lactococcus and Streptococcus. Lactobacilli were grown in MRS broth and the others were grown in Elliker broth medium. Cell biomass was obtained by centrifugation.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are a key element in the dairy industry. The gene products encoded by the plasmids of LAB carry out fermentation. To date, many successful plasmid isolation studies have been conducted with Escherichia coli, Staphilococcus, Streptococcus, Salmonella, Listeria and many strains of LAB. However, since LAB comprise a conglomerate of seven different genera, each with its own physiological and morphological characteristics, and produce a large amount of exopolysaccharide coat, it is extremely difficult to obtain plasmids by conventional methods.

The present study was done to select the potential autochthonous lactic acid bacteria (LAB) for the production of shalgam, which is a traditional Turkish lactic acid-fermented beverage. Eighteen LAB belonging to the genera Lactobacillus, Lactococcus, Pediococcus, and Leuconostoc isolated previously from shalgam samples produced in the university laboratory and by small- and largescale producers in industry were used.
