Genetic advance in chilli genotypes
-
The field experiment was conducted at Horticulture Complex, JNKVV, and Jabalpur (M.P.) during the year 2015-16 with 18 genotypes of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications to estimate the genetic variability and heritability and genetic advance for thirteen quantitative traits.

Genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance as percent of mean for 12 characters were assessed by field evalution observed for all the characters considered for the study. The analysis of variance indicated presence of significant variability among the genotypes for all the characters. Moderate GCV and higher PCV values indicated presence of substantial genetic variability and less environmental influence for average dry fruit weight, dry fruit yield per plant, and capsaicin content.

Fifteen chilli genotypes were screened for temperature resilience during summer season in of 2017-18. The genotypes were subjected to two temperature levels, i.e. optimum temperature (inside the growth chamber) and summer temperature (in open field condition). The characters like plant height, fruit length, fruit weight, pedicel length, number of seeds per fruit, rate of photosynthesis, chlorophyll, pollen fertility, pollen viability and fruit set per cent were decreased and leaf proline, leaf phenol and ascorbic acid were increased under high temperature stress.

Increased productivity of dry chilli with appreciable fruit quality is the present need in major growing areas to promote export from our country. The present investigation was undertaken to identify important selection indices, and to analyze the genetic divergence of collected germplasm for identification of diverse parents for spice chilli hybridization program. Different components of genetic variability for 15 growth and yield component traits were determined employing 45 genotypes evaluated in autumn-winter season of 2015-16 in Randomized Block Design with three replications.

The experimental material comprised of 27 advance breeding lines and six varieties including ‘Surajmukhi’ as standard in randomized complete block design with three replications during summer- rainy season 2017. Genetic diversity studies grouped 33 chilli genotypes into six clusters. Maximum genotypes were placed in cluster I (16 genotypes) followed by cluster II (7 genotypes). Highest intra-cluster distance was observed for cluster IV followed by cluster II while maximum inter-cluster distance was observed between cluster V and VI followed by IV and V.

The experimental material comprised of 33 genotypes including ‘Surajmukhi’ as standard check was evaluated in randomized complete block design with three replications during summer-rainy season 2017. The estimates of PCV and GCV were high for dry fruit yield/plant and it also showed high heritability coupled with high genetic advance along with marketable red ripe fruit yield/plant, non- marketable red ripe fruits/plant, dry fruit yield/plant and oleoresin content. Majority of the traits showed high heritability along with moderate estimates of PCV, GCV and genetic advance.
