  • In the present study SSR markers were shown to be polymorphic between parents which would help in establishing the genetic purity of hybrids in commercial seed lots. Also, few SSRs were found to discriminate among the set of hybrids which will ease the seed identity of competing hybrids in seed chain. Low probability of identity based on marker information suggests that a set of markers identified in present study can be efficiently used in establishing distinctness, identity and purity of hybrids in open markets after their release.

  • An investigation was carried out with the eighteen high sucrose containing sugarcane clones to estimate the extent of variability for various productive traits under water-logged condition. The analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences among the clones for fourteen traits and significant for rest traits viz., germination % at 45 DAP, plant height at 150 days, single cane weight and purity % at 10 month stage.

Among several efficient methods for revealing genetic variability within and among plant populations, one of the most widely applied methods is ISSR marker analysis. ISSR, markers are commonly used because they are quick, simple and environment non-sensitive enabling genetic diversity analysis in several types of plant material like natural populations, population in breeding programmes.

  • Genetic variability study of five isolates of Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri was carried out using molecular markers. The isolates were collected from five places in Maharashtra state, India. Morphological and Biochemical tests viz. gram’s reaction, starch hydrolysis, indole production, catalase test, KOH test, Gelatin liquefaction and Acid production test were carried out to identify and confirm the purity of the culture.

  • The genetic polymorphism revealed by biochemical markers (protein and isozymes) in plant population have been extensively used to, assess the genetic variability, confirm hybridity of F1s, assure purity of cultivar and establish relationship between species. Electrophoretic protein analysis holds potential utility in breeding programmes of wheat through helping in the unequivocal characterization of varieties used. Sixteen wheat genotypes along with their 32 F1’s were characterized by using protein profile polymorphism in seeds through SDS-PAGE.

  • An experiment was conducted with fifteen early maturing sugarcane clones to assess the genetic parameters for various productive traits. The analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences among the clones for twenty one traits and significant for rest traits viz., purity at 8 month & pol in cane at harvest. The Variability studies showed moderate estimates of GCV and PCV for traits viz., single cane weight and cane yield at harvest. In present set of materials high heritability with high genetic advance as per cent of mean was found in cane yield at harvest.
