Medulloblastoma (MB) is a malignant tumour of the cerebellum which can be classifed into four major subgroups based on gene expression and genomic features. Single-cell transcriptome studies have defined the cellular states underlying each MB subgroup; however, the spatial organisation of these diverse cell states and how this impacts response to therapy remains to be determined.

Capture Hi-C (CHi-C) is a method for profiling chromosomal interactions involving targeted regions of interest, such as gene promoters, globally and at high resolution. Signal detection in CHi-C data involves a number of statistical challenges that are not observed when using other Hi-C-like techniques.

The repertoire of RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) in bacteria play a crucial role in their survival, and interactions with the host machinery, but there is little information, record or characterisation in bacterial genomes. As a first step towards this, we have chosen the bacterial model system Escherichia coli, and organised all RBPs in this organism into a comprehensive database named EcRBPome.

Necrotrophic effector proteins secreted by fungal pathogens are important virulence factors that mediate the development of disease in wheat. Pyrenophora tritici-repentis (Ptr), the causal agent of wheat tan spot, has a race structure dependent on the combination of effectors.

Genome layout and gene regulation appear to be interdependent. Understanding this interdependence is key to exploring the dynamic nature of chromosome conformation and to engineering functional genomes.

Virus genome sequences, generated in ever-higher volumes, can provide new scientific insights and inform our responses to epidemics and outbreaks. To facilitate interpretation, such data must be organised and processed within scalable computing resources that encapsulate virology expertise.

In this mechanistic and formal trend we could also include what is known as contingency theory, which, according to Amat (1991), is a simplification of systems theory. This approach maintains that no control system is ideal for all organisations, but instead depends on the circumstances in which it finds itself (Amat, 1991). It is thought to have been developed by Burns and Stalker (1961), Thomson (1967), Woodward (1965), Lawrence and Lorsch (1967), and Gordon and Miller (1975).

As this document explains, we and our partners are now implementing a programme that combines laying firm foundations for sustainable improvement with other initiatives designed to have more immediate impact. The FSA alone will spend up to £10 million this year in supporting the programme. Taken together, these initiatives will reach many millions of people over the next five years. The programme takes specific account of the needs of people who may be excluded from the financial system.

After a successful MEDINFO in 1992, the Swiss Society for Medical Informatics hosts again a major event in medical informatics – the 19 th Medical Informatics Europe Conference, under the generic name of MIE2005. The host city, Geneva, is well known for its commitment in international healthcare, being the residence of several international organisations, including WHO. Geneva is also synonym with other major medical informatics achievements: the DIOGENE hospital information system and Natural Language Processing, both strongly connected to Geneva and its University Hospital...

Stratified medicine relies heavily on data analysis and the amount of medically relevant data that are available electronically increases dramatically. However, these data are generated in complex forms and are acquired and recorded in various ways. Incompatibility among research databases, electronic medical records and laboratory information management systems is then an issue. The challenge is to organise electronic data and to make them usable for research.
