Genus Allium L.

The genus Allium contains seven cultivated species of economic importance: the bulb onion (Allium cepa), aggregatum onion (A. cepa var. aggregatum L), shallot (A. cepa var. ascalonium), chive (A. schoenoprasum), Chinese chive (A. tuberosum), Japanese bunching onion (A. fistulosum), garlic (A. sativum), Leek (A. ampeloprasum var. porrum) and rakkyo (A. chinence). Of which, aggregatum onion Allium cepa var. aggregatum Don (2n= 16) is one of the important species of Allium vegetables as it forms an indispensable part of many diets, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian.

Allium dentiferum Webb & Berthel and Allium dodecanesii Karavokyrou & Tzanoudak were collected during a floristic study of South Anatolia. A. dodecanesii is reported as a new record for the flora of Turkey. Although collected earlier by Aznavour, Bothmer, and Brullo, specimens of A. dentiferum were misinterpreted and the species was thus not recorded for the flora of Turkey.

Allium saxatile M.Bieb. was collected from the north-western corner of European Turkey (Demirköy, Kırklareli) during the field survey of the “Yıldız Mountain Biosphere Project”. It has been reported as a new record for the Turkish flora. A description based on the collected specimens, photographs of its habitat and flowering plants, map of the distribution area, and its karyotype are given.

As a part of a revisional study of the genus Allium L. sect Melanocrommyum Webb et Berthel. in Turkey, detailed studies were conducted on 3 very closely related and taxonomically difficult species cited in the Flora of Turkey: Allium cyrilli Ten., A. atropurpureum Waldst. & Kit., and A. decipiens Fisch. ex Schult. & Schult. f., to clarify their occurrence in Turkey and their taxonomy.
