Najas indica (Willd.) Cham. is a freshwater submerged aquatic vegetation. N. indica is an annual plant. Therefore, seeds in the sediment and the survival and growth of seedlings play an important role in reestablishing new populations of the species. The purpose of this study was to determine the seed density in the sediment, examine the effect of salinity on seedling germination from seeds, and assess the impact of the salinity on the growth of early seedlings of N. indica under the experimental condition.

The seed containing an embryo, a miniature of new plant, structurally and physiologically equipped to sustain the growing seedling until it establish as new plant. Some traits are acquired during evolution for capacity to survive under unfavourable condition. One of such trait is ‘dormancy’, an intrinsic/extrinsic block to germination. The ABA and GA are involved in induction and release of dormancy and it also showed the involvement and complex interaction with other plant hormones such as ethylene, brassinosteriods and reactive oxygen species.

Lettuce is one of the most widely consumed vegetable throughout the world. Amongst various diseases infecting this crop, lettuce drop caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is one of the most prominent and destructive one. Lettuce drop pathogen, S. sclerotiorum produces black, hard survival structures known as sclerotia. In the present studies, carpogenic germination of sclerotia by producing apothecia and releasing ascospores as well as viability of sclerotia was studied.

Seed size emerged as a governing characteristic for germination parameters and seedling establishment owing to best evolutionary traits of plant which impart major contribution in genetic diversity. Large size increased germination rate and seedling survival, accelerated germination timing, and enhanced seedling growth. Present experiment is carried out to assess the seed size correlates with germination characteristics in Terminalia arjuna.

In vitro regeneration through seeds were studied in lime (Citrus aurantifolia) by culturing lime seeds on MS media supplemented with BAP (1, 3 and 5 mg/l), Kinetin (1, 3 and 5 mg/l) and their combination with NAA (0.1, 0.5 and 1 mg/l). In reference to increased germination percentage, mean shoot length, mean number of leaves per explant and mean root length, among BAP and Kinetin concentrations, BAP 3 mg/l was found to be the best treatment. In terms of cytokinins and NAA combine effect, BAP 5 mg/l + NAA 0.5 mg/l and Kinetin 3 mg/l + NAA at 0.1 mg/l were found to be the best combinations.

The present experiment was carried out at AICRP on Niger scheme, Regional Research and Technology Transfer Station (OUAT), Semiliguda of Koraput district under Eastern Ghat High Land zone of Odisha during kharif season of 2017 to study the germination behaviour and interaction effect of Niger and Cuscuta seeds on each other. Niger is the major host for Cuscuta survive and further growth.

Thirty interspecific crosses (including reciprocals) involving three genotypes/varieties of greengram (Vigna radiate (L) Wilczek) cv. HUM 1 HUM 2 & HUM 8 and five genotypes/varieties of blackgram (Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper) cv. T 9, Pant U 19, PDU 1, BHUU 1 & BHUU 91-346-1 were attempted. Nine out of 30 crosses were successful only when greengram was used as seed parents. The crossability ranged from 0.0 to 61.0 per cent. Germination, survival and pod bearing habit of the F1s hybrids were much better in Kharif season as compared to spring/summer season.

A systematic and comparative study on mutagenic ability of different doses of ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS, an alkylating agent), gamma rays (an ionizing radiation) and EMS + gamma rays was carried out in a well-adapted desi chickpea variety HPG17. All mutagenic treatments were effective in inducing genetic variability. A proportional decrease in germination of mutagen treated seeds as well as subsequent plant survival was observed with increase in mutagen dose.

This study was performed by exposing the seeds of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) to ethyl methane sulphonate [EMS] sodium azide [SA] to study their effects on various morphological traits when compared with control. The seeds of groundnut were pre-soaked in distilled water for 6 hours for ems and 24 hrs for SA. The SA, EMS solution was prepared in distilled water. Each concentration of SA, EMS was prepared in 100ml of distilled water for 300 groundnut seeds. These soaked seeds treated with different concentration of SA, EMS such as 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8, 0.10% and 0.12 %.

Leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L.) is a herbaceous perennial weed and dormancy in both buds and seeds is an important survival mechanism. Bud dormancy in leafy spurge exhibits three well-defined phases of para-, endo- and ecodormancy; however, seed dormancy for leafy spurge is classified as physiological dormancy that requires after-ripening and alternating temperature for maximal germination.

The better germination per cent of mango (Mangifera indica L.) stones is the criterion and strong base for successful grafts hence to enhance the germination, growth and graft parameters different pre-soaking treatments in mango was carried out. Where Mango stones of Nekkare were obtained from one single lot from a processing unit and were used. The stones were pre-soaked viz., Control, GA3, Silicylic acid, Vermiwash and Cow urine of different concentrations.

Planktonic diatoms produce resting stages that survive in the sediment and allow species persistence over periods in which vegetative growth does not occur. Sediments from coastal estuary in the Mokpo Harbour, Korea were took and investigated. Diatom germination tests from sediment were carried out in laboratory. Diatom cells were identified by microscope based on standard method.

Rhizoctonia solani causing sheath blight of rice is reported to survive through soil and collateral hosts. Although it infects seed in field, role of seed-borne inoculum in disease development is not properly understood. However, only little information is available on the role of seed-borne inoculum in disease development in the field (Roy, 1989; Acharya and Gupta, 1996; Silvalingam et al., 2006). During the present investigation seed samples of two varieties were collected from healthy seeds (i.e. seeds harvested from healthy plant panicles) and diseased seeds (i.e.
