The antifungal activities of methanol extracts from different plant parts of G. superba viz., rind, rhizomes, leaves flower and seeds were evaluated by in vitro. In different extracts tested, seed extract (82.45%) was found to possess the highest mycelial inhibitory activity at 100 per cent concentration when compared to the others followed by rind (82.33%), rhizome (82.06%), leaves (77.45%) and flower (76.39%) extract was also inhibit the mycelial growth of F. oxysporum.

Gloriosa superba (GSb) is a highly poisonous plant and its toxicity is due to anti-mitotic effects of constituents such as colchicine and gloriosine on rapidly proliferating cells. Poisoning is known to cause very rapid and severe clinical manifestations due gastro intestinal, neurological, cardiac and bone marrow toxicity.

Gloriosa superba, well known as the glory lily or superb lily, is a tropical climbing plant that features an exotic red flower. The plant is poisonous because of high concentrations of colchicine in all parts of the plant. It is commercially grown for use in Ayurveda medicine and as a cash crop for extracting colchicine in India and Africa.

Genetic diversity evaluation among 16 Gloriosa accessions collected from different locations in Tamil Nadu was studied by using Inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers. Thirty six ISSR primers were used, among that 16 primers showed 83.56 per cent polymorphism and produced 213 amplicons. This indicates that there is a high level of variation at the genetic level among these accessions. The primer UBC-807 showed the highest PIC value (0.958), which represented the high efficiency of the individual primer.
