Little is known on the significance, diversity and characteristics of gut E. coli in goats despite their importance as food animals globally. We characterized the temporal dynamics in diversity of E. coli in faecal samples from a cohort of goat kids and adult meat goats on pasture over a one-year period.

E. coli O157:H7 is an emerging food borne pathogen having zoonotic importance. Though the primary reservoir of the serotype is cattle; sheep and goats are also considered as main reservoir for E. coli O157:H7, which act as asymptomatic carriers. Conventional cultural and biochemical methods are time consuming to detect E. coli O157:H7 in food borne outbreaks and have less specificity and sensitivity. Latex agglutination test (LAT) tends to be specific, more rapid and reliable.

Before perform any parasitological examination, a pre-requisite questionnaire was used to collect data from the 100 livestock holder of district Budgam, Jammu and Kashmir to evaluate the knowledge about the use of anthelmintic against worm infestation in ruminants. The study revealed that 83.00 % respondent was aware of deworming and 92.00% respondent unaware of purpose of faecal examination of their livestock. Hence, a total of 537 faecal samples comprising of 159 (cattle), 133 (sheep) and 245(goat) was collected randomly from 5 no.

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) in ruminants are one of the major impediments in livestock production and causes enormous economic losses. Accurate identification of GIN is essential for studying epidemiology and envisage control programme. The present study describes the generic composition of strongyle affecting goats of mid Himalayan Uttarakhand by polymerase chain reaction based restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP).

E. coli is a Gram negative bacteria belonging to enterobacteriacea family. They are commonly found in the intestine of animals and humans. Most E. coli are harmless but some can cause infection. In our study, we isolated E.coli from 100 (50 from sheep and 50 from goats) faecal samples of diarrhoeic as well as healthy sheep. Isolation was done on BHI, MLA and EMB agar. The isolated bacteria suspected for E. coli were subjected to biochemical tests viz catalase, oxidase and IMViC. The isolates confirmed by biochemical tests were further confirmed by genus specific PCR.
