Goddess cult of Vietnamese

Thiên Y A Na is a special female deity in the system of Vietnamese goddesses. On the other hand, cultural changes, which mask discourses of power, and the cultural symbiosis phenomenon, which represents the vitality of ancient beliefs in spite of the deepening and spreading roots of new beliefs, can be observed from an analysis of performing practices of the Po Ina Nagar/Thiên Y A Na cult.

In the mind of the Vietnamese, each god or deity has his/her “duty” and function. The various gods and deities are related to different aspects of the human life, such as the Lady of the Realm (Bà Chúa Xứ) governs the land, the Mother Goddess of Water (Bà Thủy) governs the water, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva saves the unfortunate, the Mazu Goddess (Bà Thiên Hậu) takes care of the sea and blesses all people, etc.. Ethnics in Vietnam worship various gods and deities with the hope that their prayers are heard and responded.

The Chinese immigrated to Vietnam in general and to Hue in particular for a long time and they coexisted with the local ethnic groups. The Chinese culture had contacted with the indigenous culture in the process of living, then it gradually changed. The Mariamman temple was the place of worship for Indian community in Hồ Chí Minh City. Indian has built many places of worship since they have settled in Sài Gòn. At present, there are three places of worship for the Hindu Indian such as the Mariamman temple (called the Goddess pagoda - Chùa Bà, the Goddess pagoda of Hinduism - Chùa Bà Ấn giáo, the Black Goddess pagoda - Chùa Bà Đen), the Subramanian Swami temple (called the God pagoda - Chùa Ông), and the Sri Thenday Yutthapani temple.
