  • The immobilization method and atomic concentrations of Si 2p, Au 4f, S 2p, C 1s, N 1s, and O 1s of the resulting SA–biotin modified Si surface were determined by XPS. The CD spectrum and confocal microscopy imaging confirmed that step-by-step modification and bioconjugation can be monitored successfully. Such detailed and well-defined step-by-step characterization provides good information about the surface properties of biosensor platforms. In addition, the LSPR sensing ability of the Au Np based platforms was studied by using a model SA–biotin system.

  • Puerarin-coated gold nanoparticles (PUE-AuNPs) synthesized via green synthetic route, a new colorimetric sensor, efficiently detected the ciprofloxacin (CP) in tap water and cow milk samples. The PUE-AuNPs were characterized by UV-visible, FTIR, AFM, and DLS techniques and were found to be spherical with an average size of approximately 19–20 nm. FTIR spectrum confirms that functional groups such as –OH, -C=O, -CO and –C=C were responsible for the reduction of gold (III) chloride trihydrate. These functional groups acted as capping agents to form AuNPs.

  • The present article describes a method of determination of low antimony concentrations using a graphite furnace AAS technique after electrochemical preconcentration. A 2-electrode flow-through cell was developed with a working electrode made of gold-coated porous carbon and an accessory Pt electrode. This cell worked in online coupling with the graphite furnace atomizer. Accumulation occurred from the 6 M hydrochloric acid solution and 2M nitric acid was used to dissolve and transport antimony into the sampling loop. The sampling loop was placed on a 6-way valve.

  • Magnetic and optical bifunctional nanoparticles that combine easy separation, preconcentration, and efficient SERS capabilities have been fabricated with high sensitivity and reproducibility through a low-cost method. These gold nanoparticles attached on magnetic silica-coated cobalt nanospheres (Co@SiO2 /AuNPs) display the advantage of strong resonance absorption due to gaps at nanoscale between neighboring metal nanoparticles bringing large field enhancements, known as “hot spots”.

  • This study reports for the first time the effect of different sodium halide salts (NaClO4, NaI, and Na2CO3) in the low concentration range (in the range of 10 −7 –1 M) on the swelling behavior of photo-crosslinked, surfaceimmobilized poly(N -isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAAm) terpolymer layers. PNIPAAm terpolymer (consisting of N - isopropylacrylamide, methacrylic acid, and 4-methacryloxybenzophenone) was synthesized via free radical polymerization. The PNIPAAm terpolymer layers were prepared on gold substrates via spin coating and crosslinked and surface attached via UV radiation.

  • In this study, the size- and shape- dependent cytotoxicity of silver and gold nanoparticles have been examined. Silver nanoparticles inhibited the growth of the mold Aspergillus niger, and the one-dimension (Np1) and two-dimension (Np2) nanoparticles indicated more effective than the round ones (Np0). On the other hand, gold nanoparticles of the three types: nanostars (AuNS), polyethylene glycol coated nanostars (PEG-NS) and TAT peptide tagged nanostars (TAT-NS), placed impact on the BT549 human breast cancer cells with reduction in the cell viability.

  • Iron oxide nanorods were synthesized by chemical co-precipitation method. The structural and morphological characteristics of the as-synthesized nanorods were analyzed by Xray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the iron oxide nanorods include the mixture of Fe3O4, γ-Fe2O3 and FeOOH with the diameter and the length of iron oxide nanorods to be 30 and 100 nm, respectively. The iron oxide nanorods were then dispersed and deposited on the gold electrode of quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) for the gas sensor.

  • A new approach has been developed for the preparation of mixed-mode stationary phases to separate proteins. The pore surface of monolithic poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene dimethacrylate) capillary columns was functionalized with thiols and coated with gold nanoparticles. The final mixed mode surface chemistry was formed by attaching, in a single step, alkanethiols, mercaptoalkanoic acids, and their mixtures on the free surface of attached gold nanoparticles. Use of these mixtures allowed fine tuning of the hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance.

  • In this work we report an eco-friendly method for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using Averrhoa carambola L. fruit extract at different temperatures. AuNPs were formed and coated conjugatedly with the components of aqueous fruit extract of Averrhoa carambola L. as verified under UV-vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and used for testing of antimicrobial activity. AuNPs - Averrhoa carambola L. extract combination showed synergistic effect on the antibacterial activity as judged by well diffusion method.

  • In the study, we showed the result of covalent conjugation of antirotavirus antibody and AuNP for generating a lateral flow immunoassay strip to detect rotavirus in fecal samples. The suitable conditions for coating polyethylene glycol (PEG) on the surface of AuNP were 10.0 M PEG for 3 hours at room temperature (25 oC). Optimized conditions for covalent conjugation of antibody and AuNP were pH 4.0, 0.1 g antibody/conjugate, 0.01 mM reactant EDC/NHS [1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide hydrochloride/(N-hydroxy sulfosuccinimide].
