Gossypium arboreum
-
Reniform nematode (Rotylenchulus reniformis) has emerged as one of the most destructive root pathogens of upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) in the United States. Management of R. reniformis has been hindered by the lack of resistant G. hirsutum cultivars; however, resistance has been frequently identified in germplasm accessions from the G. arboreum collection.

Cotton (Gossypium spp.) is commonly grouped into eight diploid genomic groups and an allotetraploid genomic group, AD. The mitochondrial genomes supply new information to understand both the evolution process and the mechanism of cytoplasmic male sterility. Based on previously released mitochondrial genomes of G. hirsutum (AD1), G. barbadense (AD2), G. raimondii (D5) and G. arboreum (A2), together with data of six other mitochondrial genomes, to elucidate the evolution and diversity of mitochondrial genomes within Gossypium.

Root systems are critical for plant growth and development. The Casparian strip in root systems is involved in stress resistance and maintaining homeostasis. Casparian strip membrane domain proteins (CASPs) are responsible for the formation of Casparian strips.

Genome sequencing technologies have been improved at an exponential pace but precise chromosome-scale genome assembly still remains a great challenge. The draft genome of cultivated G. arboreum was sequenced and assembled with shotgun sequencing approach, however, it contains several misassemblies.

The research work comprising of genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance as well as correlation and path analysis study for 12 quantitative traits in three genotypes of cotton (Gossypium arboreum L.) was carried out during 2015 and 2016 at Research Farm of Cotton Section, Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, India. The genotypic differences were significant for all the traits except number of monopods/plant and number of seeds/boll.

Cotton is a long duration crop and grown over a wide range of environments. It is, therefore necessary to evaluate cotton genotypes in different environments to know its stability in varying environmental conditions. The knowledge of kind and magnitude of G x E interaction has become essential to the plant breeder in taking the decisions concerning breeding methods, selection programmes and their testing procedures in crop plants. Stability in yield is a major consideration in breeding of rainfed cotton which is highly influenced by erratic and uncertain rainfall conditions.

The Line x Tester method of analysis was followed involving 5 females viz., PA 740, PA760, PA848, PA828 and PAIG 77 and 6 males viz., AKA 9703, JLA 505, RAC 024, AKA 7, PA 08 and Phule Dhanwantary for study of heterosis for various yield and fibre characters. The F1’s and their parents were evaluated in Randomized Block Design with two replications. Observations were recorded on Days to 50% flowering, Plant height (cm), Number of sympodia per plant, Number of bolls per plant, Boll weight (g), Seed index, Seed cotton yield per plant (g) and Lint index.

Transcription factors operate as important switches of transcription networks, and NAC (NAM, ATAF, and CUC) transcription factors are a plant-specific family involved in multiple biological processes. However, this gene family has not been systematically characterized in cotton.

Present study was investigated to elucidate the role of antioxidative enzymes in imarting resistance to sucking pest attack. Antioxidative enzymes viz. SOD, CAT, POX, GR and APX were estimated in the leaves (2nd leaf & 6th leaf) of cotton genotypes infected by sucking pests at 50, 60 and 68 days after sowing (DAS) stage. The antioxidative enzyme activity before infection was maximum in 2nd & 6 th leaves of G. arboreum genotypes followed by G. hirsutum resistant genotypes and minimum in G. hirsutum susceptible genotypes.

Cotton is one of the most important fiber and cash crop of India and plays a dominant role in the industrial and agricultural economy of the country. Fifty six crosses with fifteen parents and four checks viz., PKVDH 1,PKVSuvarna, NACH 12 and PA 255 were grown in Randomized Block Design with two replications during kharif, 2016 at three locations viz.,Cotton Research Station, Mahboob Baugh Farm, Parbhani (L1), Cotton Research Station, Nanded (L2), and Agricultural Research Station, Badnapur (L3).

Cotton crop is mainly cultivated for its fibre and hence quality of lint is important in cotton. Fifty six hybrid combinations developed by crossing 7 lines and 8 testers were tested along with their parents including 4 checks in Line X Tester design for fibre quality characters during kharif, 2016 at three locations viz., Cotton Research Station, Mahboob Baugh Farm, Parbhani (L1), Cotton Research Station, Nanded (L2), and Agricultural Research Station, Badnapur (L3). The magnitude of heterosis was estimated in relation to better parent and Standard checks.

This study explains the construction of an intraspecific genetic linkage map of the A-genome diploid cotton with simple sequence repeat (SSR) and randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers, using 180 F2 plants derived from the cross of 2 Gossypium arboreum cotton cultivars (Ravi × Entry-17).

Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA markers were used to evaluate diversity and similarities in populations treated with colchicine. Colchicine treatment generated differences beyond the levels of inter and intra-population variability. Contrary to expectations, colchicine-treated plants obtained by dipping in colchicine solution for 30 min did not contain more diversity than untreated populations.

Salinity has adverse effects on plant development and ultimately reduces production. Very few reports on the genes induced by salt stress in Gossypium arboreum are available. In this report salt-stress–responsive genes were screened from cotton leaves using the differential display (DD) technique, and gene expression was compared under control and salt stressed conditions.

Salinity is among the significant abiotic stresses adversely affecting plant development and yield for a wide range of crops. For quantitative and qualitative expression studies of proton gradient regulator 5 (PGR5) under salt stress, differential display RT-PCR and rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) were performed on salt-stress responsive Gossypium arboreum.
