In order to evaluate the efficacy of certain grain protectants against Maize Weevil (Sitophilus zeamais; Curculionidae: Coleoptera), an experiment was conducted under laboratory conditions. Laboratory studies were conducted at Department of Crop Protection, Agricultural College and Research Institute, Valavachanur – 606 753, Thiruvannamalai District to study the effect of plant powders tested against rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae infesting sorghum. The efficacy of sixteen grain protectants @ 5% was compared against Sitophilus oryzae in storage. Adult weevils were exposed to the paddy, wheat and maize grains treated with the protectants. The mortality was recorded at 1, 2, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days of exposure. Subsequently, all adults were removed and the treated grains remained at the same condition for 56 days. After this interval, the F1 adult female progeny was counted. The protectants caused equally higher insect mortality on paddy and maize grain at 1 day of application.

Studies on the bio-efficacy of seed protectant chemicals against angoumois grain moth on paddy was carried out in the Seed unit UAS, Raichur during 2018-19 with ambient conditions (20.3 ± 2.3 oC temperature and 50.5 ± 6.3 % RH). The wheat varieties HD-2733 and K-307 were found moderately resistant against Sitophilus oryzae in which higher hardness, lower moisture, lesser eggs, progeny and population with longer developmental period and lesser grain weight loss and damaged grain were recorded.
