This paper examined combination of different epistemic markers in Conan Doyle’s detective stories and their Vietnamese translational equivalents. This is a descriptive and contrastive research, following the qualitative approach to examine the grammatical and lexical devices showing epistemic modality in terms of syntactic and semantic features in process of inference.

The study "Common IELTS reading strategies used by ESL/EFL students" aims to explore different types of reading strategies which are commonly employed by IELTS candidates. The findings indicate that students frequently utilize underlining/highlighting, translation, prediction, rereading, skimming/scanning, question check, summarizing, word guessing, and keyword identification whereas note-taking methods, memory/social strategies, meaning guessing of advanced vocabulary, and grammatical features are not preferable.

This study explores the lexico-grammatical features of the abstracts of research articles (RAAs) in the field of applied linguistics. The data for this study is 30 RAAs from the two journals - English for Specific Purposes Journal (ESPJ) and TESOL Quarterly Journal (TSQJ). The analysis was based on Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) as an analytical tool and confined to three systems of transitivity, modality and thematisation.

Conversation - the verbal communication between people is indispensable in daily life. However, interlocutors cannot always understand all the utterances during their conversations because of some trouble sources causing communication breakdown. Repairing the trouble sources is neccessary for the interlocutors to get an effective conversation. With the aim of discovering the main grammatical structures and their parts of speech of other-repair in English, data for the investigation is 262 extracts of 23 English film conversations containing other-repair.

In the domain of Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG), the term ‘grammatical metaphor’ as coined by Michael Halliday (2004) refers to variation in the expression of meaning, which aims to transform the functions of grammatical elements that constitute meaning [1]. Grammatical metaphor (GM), also seen as an incongruent form of expression, has become a predominant feature of official or scientific discourses.

The present paper contributes to the increasing investigation into the lexico-grammatical features of the English-medium research articles (RAs). The study investigated the use of modality in the RAs both as a whole and across the sections, and compared these features between two subsets - RAs from an internationally established journal and those from a non-indexed journal published in Vietnam. Data for the study was 30 RAs over a three-year time span from 2017 to 2019 from English for Specific Purposes and VNU Journal of Foreign Studies.

This paper aims at studying what to teach and how to teach vocabulary in young learners’ English classes in Vietnam at the present time. It is found that the children have been taught not only the meaning but also the form of the words (spelling and pronunciation). Certain grammatical features of them, for example regular and irregular plural forms of the nouns and past forms of irregular verbs have also been taught...

In this paper we introduce a modal language L T for imposing constraints on trees, and an extension LT(L r) for imposing constraints on trees decorated with feature structures. The motivation for introducing these languages is to provide tools for formalising grammatical frameworks perspicuously, and the paper illustrates this by showing how the leading ideas of GPS6 can be captured in LT(LF). In addition, the role of modal languages (and in particular, what we have called layered modal languages) as constraint formalisms for linguistic theorising is discussed in some detail. ...

Substantial formal grammatical and lexical resources exist in various NLP systems and in the form of textbook specifications. In the present paper we report on experimental results obtained in manual, semi-antomatic and automatic migration of entire computational or textbook descriptions (as opposed to a more informal reuse of ideas or the design of a single "polytheoretic" representation) from a variety of formalisms into the ALEP formalism.

This paper sketches some basic features of the SYNPHONICS account of the computational modelling of incremental language production with the example of the generation of passive sentences. The SYNPHONICS approach aims at linking psycholinguistic insights into the nature of the human natural language production process with well-established assumptions in theoretical and computational linguistics concerning the representation and processing of grammatical knowledge.

In this paper* I will argue for a model of grammatical processing that is based on uniform processing and knowledge sources. The main feature of this model is to view parsing and generation as two strongly interleaved tasks performed by a single parametrized deduction process. It will be shown that this view supports flexible and efficient natural language processing.

To account for the semi-free word order of French, Unification Categorial Grammar is extended in two ways. First, verbal valencies are contained in a set rather than in a list. Second, type-raised NP's are described as two-sided functors. The new framework does not overgenerate i.e., it accepts all and only the sentences which are grammatical. This follows partly from the elimination of false lexical ambiguities - i.e.
