Powdery mildew caused by the fungal pathogen Erysiphe necator is a global disease that reduces yield and quality in grapes (Vitis vinifera L.). Most grape cultivars are susceptible to this pathogen and thus the selection of powdery mildew resistant cultivars is a major objective of grape breeding programs. In this study, we evaluated powdery mildew resistance of a diverse set of 28 commonly cultivated local and international V. vinifera cultivars after artificial inoculations with Erysiphe necator.

Temperature and solar radiation influence Vitis vinifera L. berry ripening. Both environmental conditions fluctuate cyclically on a daily period basis and the strength of this fluctuation affects grape ripening too.

In the context of global climate change, heat stress is becoming an increasingly important constraint on grapevine growth and berry quality. There is a need to breed new grape cultivars with heat tolerance and to design effective physiological defenses against heat stress.

Domestication and selection of Vitis vinifera L. for table and wine grapes has led to a large level of berry size diversity in current grapevine cultivars. Identifying the genetic basis for this natural variation is paramount both for breeding programs and for elucidating which genes contributed to crop evolution during domestication and selection processes

The increasing temperature associated with climate change impacts grapevine phenology and development with critical effects on grape yield and composition. Plant breeding has the potential to deliver new cultivars with stable yield and quality under warmer climate conditions, but this requires the identification of stable genetic determinants.

White rot is one of the most dangerous fungal diseases and can considerably affect grape berry production and quality. However, few studies have focused on this disease, and thus, finding candidate white rot resistance genes is of great importance for breeding resistant grapevine cultivars.

The grape berry is considered a sink for primary key metabolites and relies on the use of available carbohydrates produced by photosynthesis to support its growth and development. The berry size and quality at the time of harvest mainly depends on water, sugars such as glucose, fructose and sucrose, organic acids (mainly malic and tartaric acids), amino acids (arginine, proline and glutamic acid), phenolic compounds (anthocyanins, flavonoids and tannins) and aroma precursor.

A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of different rootstocks (Dogridge, 110R, 140Ru and 1103P) on growth and physiological parameters in Crimson Seedless, Manjari Naveen and Nanasaheb Purple. Growth parameters such as trunk girth, number of canes and leaf area showed the significant difference while stock:scion ratio, graft success showed non-significant difference among the cultivars.

Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity was investigated during rooting in cuttings from three different grape cultivars (Vitis vinifera L. cvs. Muscat, Cardinal and Perlelte), and the enzyme activity and rooting ability were compared. Rooting was observed on the Muscat and Perlelte cuttings, but not on the Cardinal cuttings.

In the present study, the oil contents and some oil quality properties of seeds taken from 18 grape cultivars were examined. The results showed that the oil concentration of seeds ranged from 11.6 to 19.6%. Grape seeds were rich in oleic and linoleic acids, ranging from 17.8 to 26.5% and 60.1 to 70.1%, respectively.

The production of grapes for early table consumption is becoming more popular in the Mediterranean region of Turkey. In this study, the cultivation of 5 early table grape cultivars (‘Ergin çekirdeksizi’, ‘Uslu’, ‘Yalova incisi’, ‘Cardinal’, and ‘Perlette’) in the open field and under protected cultivation were compared in 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 seasons.
