  • We consider the task of unsupervised lecture segmentation. We formalize segmentation as a graph-partitioning task that optimizes the normalized cut criterion. Our approach moves beyond localized comparisons and takes into account longrange cohesion dependencies. Our results demonstrate that global analysis improves the segmentation accuracy and is robust in the presence of speech recognition errors.

  • Sentiment analysis seeks to identify the viewpoint(s) underlying a text span; an example application is classifying a movie review as “thumbs up” or “thumbs down”. To determine this sentiment polarity, we propose a novel machine-learning method that applies text-categorization techniques to just the subjective portions of the document. Extracting these portions can be implemented using efficient techniques for finding minimum cuts in graphs; this greatly facilitates incorporation of cross-sentence contextual constraints. ...

  • Cluster analysis is an unsupervised technique of grouping related objects without considering their label or class. The objects belonging to the same cluster are relatively more homogeneous in comparison with other clusters. The application of cluster analysis is in areas like gene expression analysis, galaxy formation, natural language processing and image segmentation etc.

  • Works of art are inscribed by the artist on the surface of reality not for their own sake. They are created in order to produce in the spectator those precisely modulated feelings whose constituent elements are represented by the letters, words and sentences of the aesthetic alphabet. We go out of our way to experience such modified feelings, both positive and negative, because they can stand in for genuine phenomena in such a way that, in being contemplated, they give rise to genuine and subtle pleasure. This pleasure has the advantage that it is in a certain sense cut...

  • European banks also cut lending to emerging markets. Their consolidated foreign claims on emerging Europe, Latin America and Asia had already started to fall in the third quarter of 2011 (see pages 18–20 of the Highlights). New syndicated and large bilateral loans from EU banking groups to emerging market borrowers then fell in the final quarter of the year. This was in contrast to lending to western Europe and other developed countries, which was essentially unchanged (Graph 8).

  • The US government has cut back on its reporting over time, and its web pages now do little more that report on current events. Unlike the Iraq War, there is no Department of Defense quarterly report on the progress of the war, and efforts to create effective Afghan security, governance, and development. There is no equivalent to the State Department weekly status report. Testimony to Congress, while useful, does not provide detailed statements or back up slide with maps, graphs, and other data on the course of the war.

  • Increased financing from other banks and bond market investors largely compensated for the cuts made by European banks in the final quarter of 2011. As a result, the overall volume of new syndicated and large bilateral loans was essentially the same as in the third quarter. In trade finance, for example, a strong balance of Asia-based lenders reported increased demand (Graph 6, right-hand panel) and these and other non-European lenders ensured that financing of trade did not fall overall.
