Greater yam (Dioscorea alata L.) is a major tropical and subtropical staple crop cultivated for its starchy tubers. Breeding of this dioecious species is hampered by its erratic flowering, yet little is currently known on the genetic determinism of its sexual reproduction.

Dioscorea alata is one of the yam species commonly known as purple yam, winged or water yam. It has high beneficial value due to high nutrition and contains anthocyanin pigment which can be extracted as food colourant. In yam plantations, farmers required to set aside 33% of their harvest as planting materials. To solve this problem, minisett technique was practiced to produce large number of healthy seed yams. Anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Penz., is one of the most serious leaf and vine epiphytotic disease of greater yam (D. alata) in India. Forty greater yam accessions were screened in the field for resistance to anthracnose disease by whole plant area scoring method. The accessions were also evaluated for resistance in the laboratory using an excised leaf technique with pure isolates of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Penz.
