  • Microalgae with their improved growth rates and accumulation of high-value-added products make their commercial production attractive. Among them, lutein, which is a carotenoid, plays a very important role due to its various applications in the food and pharmaceutical industry. Induction of its biosynthesis can be triggered by various stress conditions like light. In this study, three different light intensities (50,150 and 300 µmol photons/m2 s) and aeration rates (1, 3, and 5 L/min) were utilized to induce the lutein biosynthesis and biomass productivity in Scenedesmus obliquus.

  • In this study, the effect of textile dye (Optilan Red) toward microalgae Chlorella vulgaris was monitored for a period of 96 hours. The parameters such as specific growth rate (SGR), EC50, protein, chlorophyll, carotenoid and elemental composition of the microalgae were recorded. Results showed that SGR for C. vulgaris decreased with increase in concentration of dye and a significant decrease was noticed upto 20 ppm however, further increase in concentration showed no growth of the organism. EC50 for Optilan Red was found to be 23.16 ppm.

  • The algae are one among the biomass energy source which can be promising. The microalgae are the diverse organisms which can inhabit in different climatic conditions and adapt themselves and perpetuate forming their own niche. There is need to improve the local flora for biomass and lipid content instead of culturing exotic species. Chlorella the green microalgae, was isolated from fresh water and was characterized through molecular studies using 18s rRNA homology. The study has revealed that isolated species belong to Chlorophytes (green microalgae).

  • Green microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis is best known for astaxanthin production. The cultivation of H. pluvialis involves two main phases, namely green vegetative stage and cyst stage with astaxanthin accumulation. In fact, the growth of H. pluvialis in the vegetative stage is one of the most important parts in the entire cultivation process. The aim of the study is to investigate the influence of temperature, inoculum size, CO2 concentration and light emitting diodes (LEDs) on the specific growth rate, cell density and dry weight of H. pluvialis in the vegetative stage.

In this study, the abilities to remove copper (Cu) and accumulate lipid of the green algal species Scenedesmus sp. were examined. The microalga Scenedesmus sp. was exposed to Cu concentrations of 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, and 10 mg/l under laboratory conditions. The results indicated that Cu inhibited the growth of Scenedesmus sp. at a 96hEC50 of 7.54 mg/l. Furthermore, the highest removal rate was 89.5%.

  • Photosynthesis of micro algae is often inhibited by salt stress (Kirst, 1990). Such an inhibition may be explained by a decrease in PSII activity. Indeed, in the green microalgae, salt stress inhibits PSII activity in Dunaliella tertiolecta and Chlamydomonas reinhardtii that is associated with a state-2 transition (Gilmour et al., 1985, Endo et al., 1995). In the cyanobacteria, it has been suggested that the decreased PSII activity in salt-stressed cells is associated with the state-2 transition (Schubert et al., 1993; Schubert and Hagemann, 1990).
