Green mortar

High-volume fly ash mortar is considered a "green" material, a sustainable development solution for the construction industry, in which the fly ash replacement Portland cement content is over 50%. However, this material has the major disadvantage of slow strength development, especially at an early age, which limits its applicability.

This study uses densified mixture design algorithm (DMDA) to design the mixture proportions green mortars incorporating fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS). Three green mortar mixtures with various paste contents were designed using the DMDA method while a control cement-based mortar mixture was designed using the conventional method for comparison.

One important innovation of green construction material is natural polymer modified mortar. In this research, polymer modified mortar used natural polymer from seaweeds, they are Eucheuma Cottonii (gel) and Gracilaria Sp. The research conducted in two parts, pre-experiment and main-experiment. Pre-experiment aimed to investigate compressive strength of natural polymer modified mortar with seaweed gel (Eucheuma Cottonii) and seaweed powder (Gracilaria Sp.). The pre-experiment followed by main-experiment which investigated compressive strength and splitting tensile strength.

This study investigates the application of unground rice husk ash (URHA) as fine aggregate in mortar. Mortar samples, which typically have 0-50% URHA as the total aggregate volume, is prepared to achieve the green development of construction material industry.
