The exploitation of novel alleles from wild rice that were lost during rice cultivation could be very important for rice breeding and evolutionary studies. Plant height (PH) was a target of artificial selection during rice domestication and is still a target of modern breeding.

The wheat dwarfing gene increases lodging resistance, the grain number per spike and harvest index. Dwarf Polish wheat (Triticum polonicum L., 2n = 4x = 28, AABB, DPW), initially collected from Tulufan, Xinjiang, China, carries a semi-dwarfing gene Rht-dp on chromosome 4BS.

In the present scenario, North Eastern States, sleeping giants are the store house of indigenous knowledge base which may be utilized for second green revolution towards sustainable development of the rural areas without hampering the ecological pursuits of the region. The enriched biodiversity and other indigenous knowledge base are still unexplored and not known to others. The horticulture enterprise is one of the important vocations of the north eastern hill region people and their management practices are ancient, indigenous and traditional in nature.

Mid-Himalayan Watershed Development Project has been reckoned as an instrument to bring the second-generation Green Revolution through, increasing productivity in rainfed areas. The study revealed that the dependency ratio with respect to total workers was found to be 0.40 in case of beneficiary families and 0.26 in case of non- beneficiary families. It was found that with the interventions of the project there has significant change in area of major crops, increase in productivity and net returns of the beneficiary farms.

India produces a massive variety of agricultural crops including cereals, oilseeds and pulses. The Green Revolution has been the keystone of India‟s agricultural achievement to produce more food production. To increase productivity, blanket application of a huge capacity of chemical fertilizers is being followed keeping the health aspect at bay. Hence, an alternative technique of farming system is of urgent need which could assure the needs of increased food production with providing defense against several potential health issues.

Primary occupation of India is agriculture and rural areas are quite concerned with this occupation. There are various aspects on which the rural development is based on agriculture, improving standard of living, imparting education, women empowerment and many more. Information sharing of new production processes with farmers was prominent in the sixties which was the key to the success of the green revolution. Rural economies can be benefitted from ICT by focusing on social production, social consumption and social services in rural areas (Malhotra, 2001).

Green Revolution has made to improve agricultural production and productivity. Along with that, it caused severe stress on soil fertility, decreased chemical efficiency, failure of overall crop yield. As a result of the above factors, the farmer becomes more miserable year by year and induced them to commit suicide. This paper attempts to bring together the present status of organic farming in the World and India. The greater extent of organic agricultural land is occupied by Australia (35.65 million hectares).

In India, wheat is grown in an area of about 29.06 million hectares with a production of 86.87 million ton (FAO, 2011). The yield of wheat increased after sixties and early seventies bringing the green revolution in India. In recent years, production of wheat crop in response to the increasing application rates of the input resources is experiencing a declining trend. India is second most populous country after China which houses 15% of global population (census 2011) within 2.42% of geographical land area of world.

Green revolution has made India self-sufficient in food grain production. In most of the state of India cereal production is a surplus. But cereal production is not improving the economical condition of farmers. Vegetable cultivation is however considered as 2-3 times profitable than traditional cereal cultivation. Farmers can make more profit by cultivating vegetable after cereal crops. But in Rabi and Zaid seasons irrigation water availability is a major problem in rainfed areas.

During green revolution intensive use of chemical in agriculture might have helped to achieve a dramatic increase in crop yield ensuring food security in India, but meanwhile, the intensive application of chemical fertilizers and pesticides led to gradual decline in soil health and environment, and food safety became a major concern. This has raised question regarding the sustainability of agriculture/horticulture in the long term, urging attention towards sustainable production practices.

Drawing lessons from the results and impacts of Green Revolution have been brought to the fore again as well as the strongly differing effect amongst regions that is under investigation (Bonnis, Maestu., Gomez, 2011; Chronic Poverty Advisory Network, 2012). Identifying the underlying issues of successful implementation or eventual failure is particularly important in the sense that substantial investment will be required to cover about 172 million hectares of irrigation-equipped area by 2050 (FAO, 2019).

The indiscriminate use of agrochemicals since green revolution resulted in adverse effect on the soil fertility, crop productivity, quality of produce and more specifically on the environment system. The current scenario under such situation firmly emphasizes the need to adopt eco-friendly agricultural practices for food production by considering the sustainability of soil and environment. The use of Seaweed is considered as low cost input for plant growth and development due to presence of many nutrients as well as plant growth hormones which encourage the growth of the plants.
