There is great variation in the conservation status of the last habitats with long-term natural viable populations of the salmon species Hucho hucho in Maramureş Mountains Nature Park, Eastern Carpathians (Romania). According to the specific guidelines for Natura 2000, 42.11% are in good conservation status, 31.57% are of average status, and 26.32% are in a partially degraded condition.

Fish communities are important indicators of the health of riverine ecosystems. Fish monitoring for The Living Murray (TLM) initiative, one of Australia’s most ambitious restoration undertakings for the degraded river-floodplain biota of the River Murray system (south-eastern Australia), was carried out annually from 2005 to 2011 across six ‘Icon Sites’, including the habitats and reaches therein. These spatial and temporal components of variation in fish community abundance and composition must be taken explicitly into account for consistent assessment of riverine ecosystem health.

Petroleum is a complex mixture composed primarily of aliphatics, alicyclics and aromatic hydrocarbons. This study was to evaluate the potentials of native bacterial population of wastewater environment with the ability for bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbon polluted natural environment. A fresh water ecosystem west of Lagos state university, Ojo campus that has the history of being fed with both domestic wastewater and spent diesel oil served as source of bacterial samples. Serial dilution technique and total heterotrophic bacterial count for the wastewater was evaluated.

Cycads occur in lowland forests and are threatened by their degradation, fragmentation and over-exploitation. Our results indicate that cycad population sizes were very small (less 100 individuals) with high propagules. These increased mating between closely related individuals growing in clumps. The allozyme data show although all studied cycads maintained high levels of genetic diversity, an average of 0.556 (0.491 in C. hoabinhensis to 0.598 in C. chevalieri ), the degree of inbreeding was high.

The textile dye industries consume a substantial amount of water and produce extensive amount of waste which is contaminated by dyes like reactive dyes, azo dyes, many types of aerosols and much more non-degradable waste materials. The toxic effects of dyestuff and other organic compounds from modern effluents are harsh on human beings and also for regular habitat. Currently, most of the available dyes are aromatic and heterocyclic compounds with complex functional groups that can be converted into aromatic amines which are proved to be carcinogenic.

Fifty yeast isolates from different habitats nearby a textile factory in Menoufia governerate, Egypt were screened for their ability to decolorize the azo dyes direct red 81 (DR81) and reactive brilliant red X-3B (RBR). Out of those, twenty two isolates displayed positive results therefore they were characterized morphologically and physiologically. The most active two were identified as Meyerozyma guilliermondii and Naganishia diffluens on the bases of 28S ribosomal RNA sequencing. The bio degradation of the dyes was confirmed by UV-visible spectra and IR analysis.

The present study was conducted in two districts of Upper Brahmaputra Valley Zone of Assam namely Jorhat and Majuli district in order to assess the socio-economic profile of flood affected farmers, their employment status and perception on flood impacts. A total of 160 farmers were selected from eight villages of two districts by following proportionate cum random sampling techniques. The findings reveal that majority of the respondents were in between 41-59 years of age with education level upto class VII standard and having 4-6 members in their family with average annual income Rs.7,339.
