After dragon fruits, rambutan, lychee and longan, Vietnamese star apple was officially imported into USA market. Star apples are commonly grown and exclusively exported from Vietnam. Therefore, it has many competitive advantages in the international market. After harvest, star apples normally are infested insect pests and harmful microorganisms that can spread and damage the agricultural production.

Increasing public concern about the potential damage of chemical inputs in agricultural production systems has challenged industry to develop new and effective pest management and control strategies against insect pests, diseases and weeds. These new strategies must be less harmful to the environment than the current, chemical-based ones, and they must also safeguard the health of agricultural workers and consumers.

It also has the other name like carrot weed, congress grass and one of the ten feared noxious weed species in the world. It is harmful to all the living beings as it causes various serious problems like asthma, bronchitis, dermatitis, and hay fever in human and other mammalians and it has approximately devastated all the main crops and plants by reducing the availability of nutrients and other through competing with the crop.

The study of biodiversity associated with agro ecosystem is of significance for agro ecologist and conservation biologist, since the maintenance of biological diversity is essential for productive and ecologically sustainable agriculture. Field experiment was conducted to inventorize the insect fauna in pigeon pea ecosystem from February 2015 to July 2015. A total of 77 different species of insects belonging to 45 families under 10 orders were collected. Of the 77 species recorded, 53 species were harmful and 24 were beneficial.

In order to increase agricultural production different type of pesticides viz., organochlorines, carbamates etc. are used on large scale to kill unwanted insects, pests, plants etc.; as mode of action of most of them is not specific, they often harm or kill organisms other than pests, including humans. Residues of most common pesticides could affect the ultimate consumers (animal and human) especially when pesticide treated fruit/vegetables are consumed raw.
