Childhood obesity is a substantial public health problem. The extent to which health state preferences (utilities) are related to a child’s weight status has not been reported.

Measuring adolescents’ preferences for health states can play an important role in evaluating the delivery of pediatric healthcare. However, formal evaluation of the common direct preference elicitation methods for health states has not been done with adolescents.

This paper focuses on helping people affected by cancer – which is the leading cause of death worldwide - by identifying their personalisation needs for health websites. The aim is to identify a set of personalisation features that users prefer on these websites. Delving in a less explored area, the study also seeks to understand how user emotional states correlate with their needs for personalisation, to better define user models for health websites.

The substrate selectivity and enantioselectivity of Solanum tuberosum epoxide hydrolase 1 (StEH1) have been explored by steady-state and pre-steady-state measurements on a series of styrene oxide derivatives. A prefer-ence for the (S)- or (S,S)-enantiomers of styrene oxide, 2-methylstyrene oxide andtrans-stilbene oxide was established, with E-values of 43, 160 and 2.9, respectively.

The participants generally preferred to use and recommend materials that are in the public domain and not subject to copyright, and most of the organizations they represent want their information to reach the public unhindered. Materials produced by or funded by the Federal and most state and local government generally can’t be copyrighted and are in the public domain. Increasingly, such materials are posted on the Internet. In addition, a participant stated that if an agency is producing something with outside support, they should be required to make it freely available.

In these experiments the choices involved gambles for everyday objects (e.g. a coffee mug). It has been suggested that observed differences are due to an asymmetry of preferences between losses and gains, which might be exacerbated by age. Finally, both younger and older subjects participated in beauty contest games, in which strategic thinking plays a central role. In each case the experiments were taken from the literature allowing us to focus on age differences rather than on theories behind the experiments....

It seems apparent that new medical information resources are needed for this population group if they are to make informed decisions about their health. Studies indicate that patients who ask questions, discuss treatment options, express opinions, and state preferences during physician office visits have demonstrably better health outcomes than those who do not (Campbell and Nolfi 2005, n.p.) It is important to question how elderly patients can make the little time they have with their doctor count.

Including urinary issues in the gynecologic evaluation is helpful. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common reasons to seek medical care and are sometimes triggered by sexual activity. Urinary incontinence is an increasingly recognized health problem (see Chapter 10). Finally, because domestic violence is common (2), screening for current or previous physical, emotional, or sexual abuse is an important part of the pa- tient’s history and in some states is mandatory.

Gaynes et al. (109) did a meta-analysis of screening instruments (i.e., EPDS, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Postpartum Depression Screening Scale (PDSS), and the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D)) for depression and concluded that, "various screening instruments can identify perinatal depression". They concluded that these instruments have high specificity and low sensitivity for depressive states, and this acquires a greater importance when deciding on whether false-positives or false-negatives are preferred.

This guideline offers best practice advice on how to involve patients in decisions about prescribed medicines and how to support adherence. All NICE clinical guidelines state that treatment and care should take into account patients’ needs and preferences and patients should have the opportunity to make informed decisions about their care and treatment, in partnership with their healthcare professionals. Good communication between healthcare professionals and patients is essential. It should be supported by evidence-based written information tailored to each patient’s needs.
