The prevalence of mental strain and stress has increased in modern societies, resulting in increased public health problems. Stress can be measured either by biomarkers or by self-reports. A new biomarker that measures long-term biological stress is cortisol measured in timed hair extracts. Hair grows at approximately 1 cm per month, and retrospectively reflects average stress levels.

A distinguishing feature of the water quality problem is that environmental damages— that is, the costs to society of pollution—are highly dependent on the location of pollution sources in the hydrological, social, and economic landscape. First, the demand for water quality varies from location to location. Some waterbodies are envisioned as pristine, where recreation and species support is the overriding concern.

Health Education in Schools – The Importance of Establishing Healthy Behaviors in our Nation’s Youth
Many societies recognize the reproductive health threats facing young people—especially HIV infection and unwanted pregnancy—and see the schools as an appropriate venue for addressing such threats. They are, however, also concerned with upholding traditions and beliefs, including the expectation that young people abstain from sexual activity until marriage. Thus, traditional and religious leaders—who view themselves as the repository and transmitters of community values and beliefs—are often in the forefront of opposition to sexuality education in the schools.

Healthy, active living benefits individuals and society in many ways. Positive associations have been found between increased levels of physical activity, good nutrition and physical fitness, and healthy body weight, psychological wellbeing, musculoskeletal health, cognition and readiness to learn. A healthy, active population enhances productivity, pro-social behaviours and personal satisfaction and has the potential to reduce the burden of chronic disease.

Early-Onset drinkers or ‘Survivors’ are those people who have a continuing problem with alcohol which developed in earlier life. It is thought that two thirds of elderly problem drinkers have had an early onset of alcohol misuse. However, because of the health risks connected to heavy drinking and dependence on alcohol, the chances of reaching old age are reduced - one estimate is that the life span of a problem drinker may be shortened by on average ten to fifteen years.

Displacing older people as heads of households and depriving them of their autonomy in the name of affection are cultural norms even in countries where the family is the central institution and the sense of filial obligation is strong (11). Such infantilization and overprotection can leave the older person isolated, depressed and demoralized, and can be considered a form of abuse. In some traditional societies, older widows are abandoned and their property seized.

At its core is the promotion of healthy, voluntary and safe sexual and reproductive choices for individuals and couples, including decisions on family size and timing of marriage, that are fundamental to human well-being.
