  • Broccoli is rich in vitamins, antioxidants, minerals, free from calories and fat necessary for a healthy life. The production of broccoli is poor as compared to the developed world because of different biotic and abiotic stress. The nutritional stress is increasing with the passage of time because of low soil fertility and numerous stresses occur in the root zone of plants which reduce the uptake of minerals.

  • Three Trichoderma isolates (THDU-1, THDU-2, and THDU-3) were isolated from the root zone area of healthy bananas on the farm in Ba Thuoc district, Thanh Hoa province. All of these isolates showed high inhibitory activity against soil borne diseases Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotium rolfsii. Our study proposed a protocol of Trichoderma mass multiplication using rice media based on solid substrate fermentation (SSF) to produce commercial product of Trichoderma.

  • Plant nutrition plays a major role in quantitative and qualitative crop production in bringing sustainability and plants require seventeen essential elements for their normal growth and development. Among these, those elements required smaller in quantity is called micronutrients (Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, B, Cl, Mo and Ni). Micronutrients are essentially as important as macronutrients to have better growth, yield and quality in plants.

  • A total number of 10 rhizosperic bacteria were isolated from root environment of some healthy plants of a drastic diseased field with massive blighted symptoms of Trichosanthes dioica of Akilpur of Hooghly district, West Bengal (22.94º E 88.12º N) where soil is alluvial in nature. Among the isolates, one strain TR9 showed remarkable plant growth promoting activity. Cell free culture filtrate of TR9 produced clear zones of inhibition (diameter ranging from 1.67cm to 2.67cm) against different plant pathogenic fungi viz.

  • Biological control is known to be effective eco-friendly method for the management of crop diseases (Cook and Baker, 1983). Rhizosphere antagonists were isolated from healthy rhizosphere soil samples of chilli collected from major chilli growing areas of Andhra Pradesh. A total of 20 rhizosphere microbes were isolated. Out of which (eight fungal antagonists, ten bacterial antagonists and two fluorescent Pseudomonads) were found to exhibit antagonism against chilli wilt pathogen. On further in vitro evaluation, nine isolates including four fungi, four bacteria and one pseudomonas sp.

  • Conservation agriculture (CA) is based on principles of minimum soil disturbance through zero or minimum tillage operations, residue retention on soil surface and crop diversification which not only improves healthy functioning of soil but also enhances nutrient availability, its biological quality and aggregate formation. On the other hand, conventional tillage (CT) practices characterized by excessive tillage, residue removal and monoculture are often associated with the degradation of soil mainly in terms of depletion of Soil Organi arbon (SOC), sub-soil compaction and loss of biodiversity.

  • Bio-fertilizer is a substance used to increase the fertility of the soil. It contains microorganisms which helps the soil to gain its nutrient back and make the soil available for cultivation. Bio-fertilizer doesn’t make any kind of pollution, so it is not a threat to use them in the place of the chemical fertilizers which causes a lot of pollution to the environment. Current soil management strategies are mainly dependent on inorganic chemical-based fertilizers, which caused a serious threat to human health and environment.

  • Biochar, a charcoal produced from biomass, can sequester carbon in soil for hundreds to thousands of years. Biochar is created by heating organic material under conditions of limited or no oxygen. Soil organic matter needs to be maintained and further increased to keep soil healthy. Biochar is extremely porous which allows it to retain nutrients and water and improved soil aggregate stability. The quality of biochar as a soil ameliorant depends on the feedstock and on soil type, temperature, and humidity.

  • Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) is an important small-fruit crop, belonging to the family Rosaceae. In Himachal Pradesh, its cultivation under controlled environment is slowly gaining momentum but non-availability of good quality healthy planting material is a major obstacle in its commercial cultivation. Additionally, soil borne diseases, particular viruses transmitted by nematode vectors, cause severe production losses in strawberry culture. Use of soilless substrates can reduce the soil borne diseases besides improving the quality of the produce.
