Heat tolerant maize
-
Heat tolerance is becoming increasingly important where maize is grown under spring season in India which coincide with grain filling stage of crop resulting in tassel blast, reduced pollen viability, pollination failure and barren ears that causes devastating yield losses.

Temperature of environment increase day by day so present time identification of heat tolerant genotypes is great challenge. Because tolerance to high temperature is a multi-genic character and also many screenable traits are available. But there no single techniques available which give holistic idea about plant level heat tolerance. Gametophytic selection could be one of the alternative strategies. There are many successful attempt have been made to improve the crop plants by gametophytic selection.

Among biotic stresses affecting maize, the pre-harvest aflatoxin contamination produced by Aspergillus flavus and turcicum leaf blight (TLB) caused by Excerohilum turcicum are most important diseases in India. Resistance of maize to aflatoxin contamination and TLB, is a penultimate goal in breeding programs that screen for these important traits with the aim of developing resistant commercial hybrids. Hence a study on reaction of 26 inbred lines of heat tolerant maize to both the diseases was conducted under artificial epiphytotic field conditions for two seasons.

Studies were conducted to determine the gene action for heat adaptive traits and grain yield under heat stress condition by using the hybrids generated in L×T and NCD-II. The results revealed predominance of non-additive gene action for heat stress adaptive traits in both the experiments.

Genetic gain in Testcrosses derived from heat tolerant multi-parental synthetic populations of maize
Heat stress due to prolonged high ambient temperature during critical growth stages is a serious threat to crop production worldwide. Though being a C4 crop, maize has relatively wider adaptation, however, weather extremes such as heat stress is challenging its threshold limits. There is an absolute requirement of heat tolerant cultivars in the present condition as climate change has a become reality.

High temperature stress is one of the most detrimental abiotic stresses which adversely affect productivity of maize (Zea mays L.) in tropics and subtropics. Plants respond to high temperature stress by regulating expression of an array of genes, heat shock proteins (HSPs) being one of them. Owing to highly differential expression of HSPs in various crop species under high temperature stress, these could be considered as key stress responsive genes.

The protein synthesis elongation factor, EF-Tu, is a protein that carries aminoacyl-tRNA to the A-site of the ribosome during the elongation phase of protein synthesis. In maize (Zea maysL) this protein has been implicated in heat tol-erance, and it hasbeenhypothesizedthatEF-Tuconfersheat tolerance by acting as amolecular chaperone and protecting heat-labile proteins from thermal aggregation and inactiva-tion.
