Clean water for drinking and cooking has been a serious issue in rural areas of Vietnam, which is mainly due to high-cost treatment of the available water sources in such areas. In order to reduce the treatment cost, iron impregnated ceramic granules (IICGs) was synthesized using a mixture of locally available montmorillonite and crushed rice husk (with the rice husk size < 0.2 mm, IICGs size 0.2 mm – 0.45 mm).

Alcohol cessation in youth with daily drinking poses a risk of severe and life-threatening alcohol withdrawal. If unsupervised, alcohol withdrawal in heavy users can cause severe complications, such as seizures, delirium tremens, and death. We present the case of a teenager admitted at our pediatric center for the prevention of alcohol withdrawal using an innovative protocol, including a fixed-dosage benzodiazepine regimen.

Phosphatidylethanols (PEths) are specific, direct alcohol biomarkers with a substantially longer half-life than ethanol, and can be used to distinguish between heavy- and social drinking. More than forty PEth homologues have been detected in blood from heavy drinkers, and PEth 16:0/18:1 is the predominant one.

The results revealed that surface water possessed more potential non-carcinogenic harmful health risks to the residents of the study area to compare to groundwater. As regards carcinogenic health risks, on average there is a possibility of 5 persons in every 106 developing cancer due to lifetime exposure to Cd through ingestion of groundwater.

Domestic water system of Thai Nguyen city originates from Nui Coc lake which has an area of 25km2 . In fact, due to these original areas that have many metal mines, such as tin, lead, zinc, vonfram,..., the content of heavy metal in the water resource raises need for concern. Therefore, we evaluated the content of some elements: Cr, Mn, Cu, Cd, Pb, Hg in the water resource of Nui Coc lake, Tich Luong lake and the domestic water system of Thai Nguyen city to compare with the Vietnamese standard of maximum acceptable heavy metal content in drinking water.

The aim of this study was to determine natural radioactive and heavy element concentrations in Mersin drinking water samples before the commissioning of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant and to collect data for possible environmental contaminations in the future. Drinking water samples were taken from the provincial center, districts, and populated villages. The annual effective dose of natural radionuclides and cancer risks were calculated for each person living in the city. Hazard index and cancer risk were calculated, which were caused by heavy elements.

El-Salam (peace) canal, having a mixture of such drainage water and the Nile water (1:1 ratio), crosses the Suez canal eastward to the deserts of north Sinai. Water-borne diseases have been estimated to cause more than two million deaths and four billion cases of diarrhea annually. Water-borne pathogenic organisms include bacteria, protozoa, and viruses. Heavy metal contamination of water is also a potential threat to human health. This study aimed to detect contamination of potable water with protozoal and bacterial pathogens as well as heavy metals in Gharbiya governorate in the middle of the Nile Delta, Egypt. Elevations in mean red blood cell volume (MCV), serum gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) and carbohydrate deficient transferrin (CDT) are markers of heavy drinking in preceding weeks. The difficulty in assessing their accuracy as diagnostic tests has been that self reported consumption is used as the “gold standard” but sometimes a biological marker may be more accurate than a self report.36-38 False positive results occur with GGT and MCV due to other causes of elevation.

It is thought that two thirds of elderly problem drinkers have had an early onset of alcohol misuse.
