Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis
-
Canine hemorrhagic gastroenteritis (also canine gastrointestinal hemorrhagic syndrome) is commonly associated with Clostridium perfringens, although in some cases the etiology remains unclear. This report describes a fatal acute hemorrhagic and necrotizing gastroenteropathy in a dog associated with Clostridium sordellii, a bacterial species never before identified as the etiological agent of hemorrhagic and necrotizing gastroenteropathy in dogs.

CPV-2 causes hemorrhagic gastroenteritis in dogs and spreads rapidly in both domestic as well as wild population of canines. The virus sheds in large numbers in the feces, so the present study was designed to detect CPV and to identify the prevailing antigenic types of CPV using molecular techniques from rectal swabs of affected dogs. The incidence of CPV was found to be 18% and 63% by PCR and NPCR respectively. The most prevailing antigenic type as detected by Real time PCR was found to be CPV-2a.

Parvoviruses (Parvoviridae) are small, non-enveloped, single-stranded DNA viruses that are known to cause disease in a variety of mammalian species, although most parvoviruses are species specific. In the present study, a total of 98 dogs were presented with hemorrhagic gastroenteritis to Small Animal Medicine Unit of TVCC, RIVER. Faecal samples collected in PBS were subjected for PCR assay and five samples were randomly selected for electron microscopic study. All the samples subjected for electron microscopic study showed parvo like viruses.

CPV infection is considered as the most pathogenic and contagious infection of dogs causing haemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Molecular detection using PCR is used widely for detection and confirmation of CPV infection in dogs. Present study was conducted to detect CPV in the faeces of dogs showing clinical signs of hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. A total of 52 dogs suffering from gastroenteritis were screened for the study, out of which 31 dogs were found to be affected with CPV infection.

Adenovirus can be isolated from HSCT recipients at rates varying from 5 to 18%. Although hemorrhagic cystitis, pneumonia, gastroenteritis, and fatal disseminated infection have been reported, adenovirus infection, which (like CMV infection) usually occurs in the first or second month after transplantation, is often asymptomatic. A role for cidofovir therapy has been suggested, but the efficacy of this agent is unproven. Infections with parvovirus B19 (presenting as anemia or occasionally as pancytopenia) and enteroviruses (sometimes fatal) can occur.
