Herbicide glyphosate

Glyphosate is the best-selling herbicide worldwide. The toxicity on ecosystems and the possible effects on human health have long been at the centre of a complex controversy concerning the authorisation for its use. The peculiar chemical-physical properties of glyphosate, AMPA and glufosinate make their determination at trace levels in the water a real analytical challenge.

Glyphosate is a herbicide which is commonly used in agricultural areas. However, previous studies on glyphosate exposure in farmers and their health are still scarce. Methods: A longitudinal pre-post study was performed among maize farmers. Information from questionnaires, urine and blood samples, and lung function were collected a day before and a day after glyphosate application in the morning.

This study reports on glyphosate resistant (GR) weeds and their resistance mechanisms based on global scientifically reported cases. Forty-nine different weed species have evolved resistance to glyphosate in 29 countries with a total of 318 identified cases worldwide. Fifty percent of these resistance cases were found in glyphosate-resistant cropping systems.

In the present investigation, an attempt was made to assess the compatibility of six agrochemicals such as Fungicides (Metalaxyl and Tricyclazole), Insecticides (Profenophos and Chloranthraniliprole) and Herbicides (Glyphosate and Atrazine) against five potassium releasing bacterial and two fungal isolates from Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. Compatibility tests indicated that glyphosate has much severe effect on microbial biomass at low, recommended and double doses.

A field experiment was conducted at Main Agricultural Research Station (MARS), Agriculture College, Dharwad to study the “effect of sequential application of herbicides on microbial activities and yield of maize”. Six herbicides namely glyphosate, paraquat, glufosinate ammonium, saflufenacil, halosulfuron and imazathapyr were tried as a post emergence in addition to pre-emergence application of atrazine.

The increased selection pressure of the herbicide glyphosate has played a role in the evolution of glyphosate-resistance in weedy species, an issue that is becoming a threat to global agriculture. The molecular components involved in the cellular toxicity response to this herbicide at the expression level are still unidentified.

Herbicide resistance in weedy plant populations can develop through different mechanisms such as gene flow of herbicide resistance transgenes from crop species into compatible weedy species or by natural evolution of herbicide resistance or tolerance following selection pressure.

Among the ten herbicides viz., Glyphosate, 2,4-D Sodium salt, Butachlor, Pretilachlor, Oxadiargyl, Pyrazosulfuron ethyl, Bensulfuron methyl 0.6% + Pretilachlor 6%, Cyhalofop-butyl, Bispyribac sodium and Ethoxy sulfuron tested against sclerotial viability only two, viz., Butachlor and Pretilachlor were found to be effective in inhibiting sclerotial germination even at lower incubation period of 5 min. both in soil application and in vitro. Glyphosate inhibited sclerotial germination at higher incubation periods i.e., 18 h and 24 h.
