Heritability percentage

Although genome-wide association studies have successfully identified thousands of variants associated to complex traits, these variants only explain a small amount of the entire heritability of the trait. Gene-gene interactions have been proposed as a source to explain a significant percentage of the missing heritability.

Eleven genotypes of garlic were evaluated for genetic variability and correlation for fifteen quantitative traits. The magnitude of phenotypic coefficient of variation was found greater than the corresponding genotypic coefficient of variation for all the characters indicating the importance of environment in expression of characters.

An investigation was carried out at cashew research station under AICRP on cashew Ranasinghapur, Bhubaneswar, Khurda, during the year 2015-2017, to study the variability in thirty land races of cashew. It was found that, the heritability was highest in canopy area per m2 (99.82%) and minimum was recorded in canopy spread north-south (61.54%). The genetic variability with heritability gives a reliable picture of the genetic advance to be expected for the selection.

Genetic parameters, variability, heritability and genetic advance were studied among 20 groundnut cultures rabi-2016-17 to study the variation and to identify traits of high heritability. The characters hundred kernel weight, hundred pod weight, dry pod yield and kernel yield had high GCV, heritability and GAM were found to be under the control of additive gene action, while the traits shelling percentage, sound mature kernel and final plant stand with moderate heritability and high genetic advance appeared to be under the predominant influence of additive gene action.

An experiment was conducted to study the variability for ascorbic acid, beta carotene and minerals content (phosphorous, potassium and calcium) in knolkhol (Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes L.) genotypes under sub-tropical condition of Jammu, at Vegetable Research Farm, SKUAST-J, Main campus, during the year 2016-17. High heritability (>70%) was estimated for all the quality traits and moderate for marketable knob weight/plant.

An investigation was carried out in the BC4F4 generation with 95 plants for studying variability, correlation and path analysis. Low PCV and GCV values were recorded for the characters namely, days to fifty percent flowering, plant height, panicle length, number of productive tillers, grain length, grain width and hundred seed weight. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance as percentage of mean was observed for plant height, panicle length, number of productive tillers, grain width, seeds per panicle.

Genetic variability, heritability and correlation at genotypic and phenotypic levels and path analysis were studied for various yield and its component characters in seventy five S6 progenies along with five checks of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) during Rabi, 2009-10. Analysis of variance revealed significant difference for all the characters indicating the presence of good amount of variability in the S6 progenies studied. The estimates of GCV along with PCV, heritability and genetic advance as percentage of mean were higher for seed yield per plant.

An investigation was carried out at ZARS, VC Farm, Mandya during 2015 to study the variability produced in two F2 populations of rice viz., ‘Rajamudi × BR-2655’ and ‘Rathnachoodi × BR-2655’ with 500 single plants to estimate the variability, heritability, genetic advance and genetic advance as percentage. The results showed that PCV values in general were higher than GCV for various characters studied. The high PCV and GCV values was obtained for grain yield per plant and low PCV and GCV was observed for thousand grain weight and panicle length.

The variability is the soul of any breeding programme, so, in this research an attempt was made to assess the morphological variability using thirteen characters in coriander. The values of heritability in broad sense were observed very high for total oil content followed by days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, 1000 - seed weight, seed yield per plant, umbels per plant, seeds per plant, seeds per umbel and plant height. Genetic advance as percentage of mean ranged between 0.67 % for primary branches per plant, to 78.27% for umbels per plant.

With the aim to assess the extent of genetic variability, heritability, genetic advance for yield and kernel quality traits in twenty five diverse QPM inbred lines. The crop was raised at Instructional Farm, Tirhut College of Agriculture, DRPCAU, Pusa, Samastipur (Bihar) during kharif 2018.The trail was set up in randomized block design with three replications having plot size of 1.5 x 4.0 = 6 m 2 . Analysis of variance revealed significant differences for 11 characters studied among the genotypes.

An experiment was conducted to estimate genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance expressed as per cent of mean in F2 population of two crosses viz., DCS-47-1 × PL-1 and DCS-47-1 × PGCP-12 in cowpea. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among the segregants tested for all the sixteen characters. High PCV and GVC were observed for number of secondary branches per plant, leaf to stem ratio, number of pods per plant, green fodder yield per plant, green fodder yield per metre row length and stover yield per plant in both the populations.

The experiment was conducted at the farm of Agricultural Botany Section, College of Agriculture, Nagpur during kharif 2017 in M3 generation. 62 mutants along with two checks (TAMS-38 and JS-335) were evaluated in M3 generation in three replications of which only 20 survived.

Investigations were carried out to draw out information in 30 progenies of Ailanthus excelsa Roxb. genetic resources to elicit information on the Variability, Heritability and Genetic advance among the biometric and physiological attributes. The number of branches registered maximum PCV and GCV followed by volume index, plant height and basal diameter and chlorophyll ‘a’, chlorophyll ‘b’, chlorophyll a/b ratio and total chlorophyll content had recorded low phenotypic coefficient of variation and genotypic coefficient of variation.

Forty two genotypes of pearl millet were evaluated in randomized block design for twenty two physiological, nutritional and yield related traits to estimate genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance as a percentage of mean. The analysis of variance revealed significant variability for all the 22 yield, physiological and nutritional traits.
