Heteromorphic sex chromosomes
-
Heteromorphic sex chromosomes have evolved repeatedly across diverse species. Suppression of recombination between X and Y chromosomes leads to degeneration of the Y chromosome. The progression of degeneration is not well understood, as complete sequence assemblies of heteromorphic Y chromosomes have only been generated across a handful of taxa with highly degenerate sex chromosomes.

Patterns of gene expression can be dramatically different between males and females of the same species, in part due to genes on sex chromosomes. Here we test for sex differences in early transcriptomic response to oxidative stress in a species which lacks heteromorphic sex chromosomes, the copepod Tigriopus californicus.

Coccinia grandis is a dioecious species of Cucurbitaceae having heteromorphic sex chromosomes. The chromosome constitution of male and female plants is 22 + XY and 22 + XX respectively. Y chromosome of male sex is conspicuously large and plays a decisive role in determining maleness.
