Heterosis effect
-
Heterosis has been exploited for decades in different animals and crops due to it resulting in dramatic increases in yield and adaptability. Hybridization is a classical breeding method that can effectively improve the genetic characteristics of organisms through heterosis.

Cotton is an important fiber crop but has serious heterosis effects, and cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) is the major cause of heterosis in plants. However, to the best of our knowledge, no studies have investigated CMS Yamian A in cotton with the genetic background of Australian wild Gossypium bickii. Conjoint transcriptomic and proteomic analysis was first performed between Yamian A and its maintainer Yamian B.

An experiment was conducted to exploit heterosis in F1 hybrids of sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) and to identify parents with desirable genetic effects with respect to single-cut green fodder yield and its component traits. 48 F1 hybrids were evaluated to assess general and specific combining ability and gene action governing the green fodder yield and its attributing traits.

Heterosis or hybrid vigour is the increased or decreased vigour growth, fitness or yield of a hybrid over the parental values, resulting from the crossing of genetically divers genotype. Heterosis has positive association with specific combining ability (sca) variance. For the development of effective heterosis breeding programme in sweet sorghum, one needs to have information about genetic architecture and estimated prepotency of parents in hybrid combinations.

The study becomes much more reliable if a good degree of correspondence is observed between various genetic estimates over filial generations. Further, extent of heterosis will have direct effect on breeding methodology in varietal improvement programmes. Therefore, keeping aforesaid considerations in view, present study was undertaken in soybean to evaluate, identification and selection of better nutritional quality genotypes.

A set of 24 cross combinations were developed through Line × Tester mating system involving 11 diverse genotypes of tomato and observations were taken for yield and yield attributing characters to study the extent of heterosis in the crosses. Tomato is an autogamous crop and has originated in the Peru region of South America. The experiment was conducted in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications.

An experiment comprised of six male sterile lines, eight inbred testers of pearl millet, their 48 hybrids and two standard check (GHB-538 and GHB-558) was conducted at Regional Research Station, Anand Agricultural University, Anand, Gujarat in Kharif 2014 for studying the extent of hybrid vigour in F1 for grain yield and its components. The cross JMSA-9904 x AIB-15 showed highest and significant standard heterosis for total effective tillers, ear head girth, grain yield per plant and panicle harvest index.

In view to invigorate hybrid rice breeding and exploration of heterosis in untapped, low productive genetic pool of non-basmati aromatic rice, altogether thirtyF1’s were generated in L x T design fashion with thirteen parents (3 testers and 10 lines), and were evaluated along with the parents to unravel the combining ability for 28 yield and yield contributing traits. The study revealed importance of both additive and non-additive gene effects in governing yield and yield components with preponderance of non-additive gene action for most of the yield components.

Combining ability analysis was carried out for earliness, fruit yield and its related traits in okra in a 6 × 6 full diallel fashion. Both general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) variances are highly significant for all the characters indicating the importance of additive and non-additive gene actions. The highest significant negative GCA effect for earliness were recorded by the parents Arka Anamika, Parbhani kranti and for fruit yield per plant the best general combiner were found to be Parbhani kranti.

Heterosis, Tomato, Yield and A 8x8 full diallel cross of tomato was evaluated with parents and cheks for heterotic manifestation of yield and yield attributing characters. The heterosis over commercial check-2 to the extent of 107.08, 59.79, -13.59, 174.70 and 13.58 per cent was recorded for plant height at 60 DAP, number of branches per plant 60 DAT, days to fifty per cent flowering, number of fruits per plant and average fruit weight respectively. The crosses showing heterosis for yield per plant were not heterotic for all the characters under study.
