Heterosis for grain yield
-
An investigation was taken up to study the magnitude of heterosis for nine characters in rice viz., days to 50 percent flowering, days to maturity, plant height at maturity, productive tillers per plant, tillers per square meter, thousand grain weight, grains per panicle, and yield per plant. The base material for this experiment consisted of 36 F1s involving three cytoplasmic male sterile lines (CMS) and twelve diverse restorers in line x tester mating design along with best varietal check Phule Samruddhi and best hybrid check Sahyadri-4.

Genetic analysis of biparental progenies resulted that, the traits viz,. days to 50% RWC and plant height were governed by additive gene action for improvement of these traits while, days to flowering, productive tillers per plant, 1000- grain weight, and grain yield can be improved by heterosis breeding. Main objective of the study was to evaluate rice genotypes for yield and yield related traits for heterosis to develop new breeding lines that can perform better in water stress conditions.

Five lines and ten testers were crossed in line x tester design to produce 50 cross combinations in order to identify the high yielding and early flowering post rainy sorghum hybrids. Promising hybrids were sorted out based on positive significant standard heterosis for grain yield along with negative significant standard heterosis for days to maturity.

Tools for yield prediction are requisite to any successful heterosis breeding program. In this study, heterosis was evaluated in 10 × 10 half diallel along with 3 checks in RBD with 3 replications in maize for grain yield and architectural traits viz., ear length, number of grain rows per ear, 100-grain weight, grain yield per plant and harvest index etc.

The standard heterosis was estimated as per cent increase or decrease of the mean of F1 over the value of the standard check CSH 19 R. The data on all the above characters were subjected to combining ability analysis by following Kempthorne (1957) method.

Moench) with respect to yield and its associated components using six newly developed (CGMS) lines and eleven testers. The resulted 66 hybrids and their 17 parents along with two standard checks (CSH 14 – for earliness and CSH 35 – for yield) were evaluated to assess magnitude of heterosis, heterobeltiosis and economic heterosis by using line × tester analysis at Sorghum Research Unit, Dr. P.D.K.V. Akola 444 001, Maharashtra during Kharif 2015-16.
