Heterosis studies for earliness
-
Heterosis manifestation in tomato is in the form of the greater vigour, faster growth and development, earliness in maturity, increased productivity (Yordanov, 1983). So, by exploiting the heterosis for various yield contributing traits and earliness a speedy improvement in tomato can be done.

The present study was carried out for development of hybrids in ridge gourd for earliness and yield traits. Twenty eight crosses were developed through half diallel fashion. Evaluated the crosses and along with their parents in Randomized block design (RBD). Significant differences found in the analysis of variance for early and yield related traits which indicates enormous genetic variability present in the ridge gourd.

The present study on sugarcane cross derivatives involving ‘Co’ clones, it was found that specific combining ability was more important than general combining ability for number of millable canes (NMC),cane thickness and HR brix. The inbred 83 R 23 (1148-13-11-2- 255) was the best general combiner for NMC, 97 R 401 (1148-S5-242-3) for cane thickness and Co 98008, Co C 671 and Co 0240,1148-S4-242-1, 148-S5-242-3 and Co 0209 for HR brix.

The present study was carried out on heterosis for fruit yield and yield related traits in sponge gourd. Fifteen hybrids of sponge gourd were developed using six parents in half diallel fashion were studied for estimation of heterosis for 10 yield contributing traits. Hybrids PSG-82 × PSG-07-04, PSG-07-04 × PSG-161 and PSG-07-04 × PSG-199 were found most promising for earliness and yield. These hybrids exhibited heterosis to the tune of 59.36, 48.45 and 43.85 per cent over their better parents and 81.58, 69.16 and 63.

The present investigation was carried out with the objective to assess the magnitude and direction of heterosis and to identify good combiners for growth, earliness and yield characters. The maximum heterosis over better parent, the best parent and the commercial check was observed in the cross Bot.G-6-2 X Arka Bahar for all the growth parameters studied except heterobeltiosis for vine length.

Heterosis and combining ability evaluation for yield, quality, and fruit fly resistance in muskmelon
The objective of this study was to breed muskmelon hybrids possessing higher TSS, flesh, and rind thickness, early and total yields; lower seed cavity; and resistance to fruit fly. Eight genetically diverse parents viz., Kesar, exotic collections (EC-2, EC-3, EC-4, EC-5), and indigenous collections (GP-210, GP-211, GP-141) were crossed in a diallel fashion excluding reciprocals. The resulting 28 F1's were evaluated with their parents in completely randomized block design with three replications under open field conditions.

Tools for yield prediction are requisite to any successful heterosis breeding program. In this study, heterosis was evaluated by 42 crosses develop by line x tester design (14 lines and 3 testers) along with 2 checks in RBD with 3 replications in wheat for earliness and heat tolerant traits viz.,days to 50 per cent flowering, heat injury, proline content and total chlorophyll content on pooled basis.

The present study was carried out for development of hybrids in sponge gourd for earliness and yield traits. Twenty eight crosses were developed by crossing 8 × 8 diallel mating design (excluding reciprocal). Evaluated the crosses and along with their parents in randomized block design (RBD). Analysis of variance indicated highly significant differences for growth, earliness and yields characters, which suggesting presence of wide genetic variability. The magnitude of standard heterosis was found in desirable direction for early and yield traits viz.

Tomato grown during the main season (winter) causes a glut of produce in the market and its sale price is also very low. But the crop grown in rainy season has a better demand and is much remunerative for the farmer. Therefore, the present experiment was undertaken to develop and identify tomato hybrids well adapted to the rainy season. The experiment was conducted at the All India Co-ordinated Research Project on Vegetable Crops, Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneswar.

The present investigation aimed to study genetic divergence and clustering pattern of 37super-early pigeon pea genotypes. Analysis of variance and hierarchical cluster analysis of tocher’s method revealed significant differences among the genotypes for all the traits under study. Based on genetic distance (D2 value), the 37 genotypes were grouped into 9 distinctive clusters, of which cluster I and II formed the largest clusters with 10 genotypes in each. Among all the characters understudy, leaf area index(LAI) at 60 DAS contributed more to the divergence followed by leaf area (17.

The experiment was conducted at college of Agriculture, Vijayapur to study heterotic performance of 40 sunflower hybrids over the checks (Standard heterosis) during kharif2018. The experiment consisted of 8 testers and 5 lines used in line x tester fashion to produce 40 hybrid combinations. These 40 hybrid combinations were studied for heterosis performance over two checks KBSH-53 and Cauvery Champ respectively. All the hybrid combinations showed negative heterosis for days to 50 % flowering over checks indicating earliness over both the checks.

A study was conducted in ricebean [Vigna umbellata (Thunb.) Ohwi and Ohashi] at Department of Organic Agriculture, CSKHPKV, Palampur to assess the extent of heterosis for eleven characters including grain yield per plant. Six lines and two testers were crossed in line × tester mating design to develop 12 F1 hybrids. The analysis of variance revealed considerable genetic differences among the genotypes. The variance due to parents was significant for all the traits except pods per cluster whereas variance due to crosses was significant all the traits under study.

The study of heterosis would help in selection of heterotic crosses for commercial exploitation of F1 hybrids in okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench). 45 F1s were developed by crossing 10 elite lines of okra in half diallel fashion during summer 2016. All 45 F1s along with their 10 parents and one standard control (Nunhems hybrid Shakti) were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with three replicates during late kharif (July to October) 2016 at ICAR- Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Babbur Farm, Hiriyur, Chitradurga, Karnataka, India, for heterosis of yield and its components of okra.
