  • Contaminants in plating wastewater are hard to remove, especially hexavalent chromium ions. This waste stream contains a large amount of Cr6+, a highly toxic metal, potential to cause cancer. To reduce this pollution, sludge from a supply water treatment plant (DWTS) has been used to make adsorbent.

  • Hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), is a highly toxic species, while trivalent chromium, Cr(III), is an essential trace element for humans and other organisms. In the present work, a simple, rapid, and efficient procedure for water treatment of Cr(VI) is described. Active carbon (AC) was chemically treated with HCl and NaOH for the formation of surface modified Acidic-AC and Basic-AC sorbents, respectively. In addition, AC sorbent was treated with HNO3 as an oxidizing agent and sodium sulfite as a reducing agent for the formation of Ox-AC and Rd-AC sorbents, respectively.

  • A fast, simple, and reliable method for determination of hexavalent chromium species in soil aqueous and alkaline extracts has been developed. The procedure is based on the ion-pair extraction of Cr(VI) with methyltrioctylammonium chloride (Aliquat 336) into xylene. The extract is analyzed by flame (FAAS) or electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS).

  • In the present work, the reaction of Cr(VI) with 1,5-diphenylcarbazide in microplates (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay microtiter plate) and a subsequent determination in a plate reader at 540 nm were performed. The final volume utilized for each determination was 200 µL, and the cost and waste were reduced for hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] quantification. The use of microplates allowed for the analysis of a large number of samples, reducing analysis time.

  • A novel technique based on photocatalysis was applied to eliminate chromium ions, a toxic hazardous environmental pollutant. The photoreduction of each species of chromium (total, hexavalent, and trivalent chromiums) from chrome-electroplating wastewater was investigated using a titanium dioxide suspension under irradiation by a low-pressure mercury lamp. The initial concentration of total chromium was 300 mg/l. The applied conditions were the direct photocatalytic reduction process at pH 3.65 and the indirect photocatalytic reduction with added hole scavengers at the same solution pH.

  • To study the impact of radish oil on the possible genotoxic and hepatotoxic effects of hexavalent chromium, male rats were divided into 4 groups. Group 1 served as control, group 2 received radish oil at the recommended human therapeutic dose (0.07 mL/kg) by gavage, group 3 received sodium dichromate dihydrate (SDD) 520 mg/L in drinking water, and group 4 received both SDD and radish oil as previously mentioned in groups 2 and 3. All treatments were continued for six months.

  • A strain of Pseudomonas sp. C-171 capable of tolerating hexavalent chromium (Cr+6) up to 2000 ppm as potassium dichromate was isolated from domestic sewage. The Cr+6 reduction was checked by growing the isolated strain in a medium containing potassium dichromate as Cr+6 source.

  • Groundwater remediation by nanoparticles has become a major interest in recent years. This report presents the ability of hexavalent chromium removal in aqueous using iron (Fe0) nanoparticles. Cr(VI) is a major pollution of groundwater and more toxic than Cr(III). Fe0 reduces Cr(VI), transforming Cr(VI) to nontoxic Cr(III). At a dose of 0.2g/l iron (Feo) nanoparticles, 100% of Cr(VI) 5mg/l was removed after only 20 minutes. The Cr(VI) removal efficiency increased with decreasing initial pH.
