High affinity transport system

In plants, the uptake from soil and intercellular transport of inorganic phosphate (Pi) is mediated by the PHT1 family of membrane-spanning proton : Pi symporters. The Arabidopsis thaliana AtPHT1 gene family comprises nine putative high-affinity Pi transporters. While AtPHT1;1 to AtPHT1;4 are involved in Pi acquisition from the rhizosphere, the role of the remaining transporters is less clear.

Isolation and functional characterization of a high affinity urea transporter from roots of Zea mays
Despite its extensive use as a nitrogen fertilizer, the role of urea as a directly accessible nitrogen source for crop plants is still poorly understood. So far, the physiological and molecular aspects of urea acquisition have been investigated only in few plant species highlighting the importance of a high-affinity transport system.

Periplasmic binding proteins are abundant in bacteria by virtue of their essential roles as high-affinity receptors in ABC transport systems and chemotaxis. One of the best studied of these receptors is the so-called glucose⁄galactose-binding protein. Here, we report the X-ray structure of the Salmonella typhimuriumprotein bound to the physiologically relevant ligand, (2R)-glyceryl-b-d-galactopyranoside, solved by molecular replace-ment, and refined to 1.87 A˚ resolution with RandR-free values of 17% and 22%....

In Bacteria and Archaea, high-affinity potassium uptake is mediated by the ATP-driven KdpFABC complex. On the basis of the biochemical properties of the ATP-hydrolyzing subunit KdpB, the transport complex is classified as type IA P-type ATPase.
