Himalayan ecosystem

Soils of Paschimi Nayyar river watershed in Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, India were identified and characterized using remote sensing and GIS techniques. They area falls in warm humid Himalayan ecosystem. On the basis of interpreted remote sensing image data and field checks four major physiographies viz., escarpments, hill/ridge tops, side/reposed slopes and valleys were identified which were further sub divided into 8 physiographic units based on image elements and slope functions.

This study examines the potential of indigenous Eisenia fetida in the conversion of precomposted substrate mixtures of cow dung, chinar leaves (Platanus orientalis), paper and kitchen waste and quantification of nitrogen recovery from the waste combinations through economical methodology. The experiment was conducted at Mountain Livestock Research Institute, Manasbal, Kashmir. The treatments consisted of four pre-decomposed biowaste substrate combinations of cow dung, chinar leaves, paper waste and kitchen with different ratios.

Subsistence farming of Ladakh region is a production management system also identified as Remarkable land use systems excluding of all synthetic off-farm inputs but rely upon agri-livestock livelihood options best suited for sustainable development involving crop rotations, crop residues, animal manures, off-farm organic waste for nutrient mobilization and plant protection, etc which promotes biodiversity and agro-ecosystem health.
