Horn cancer

It is one of the most prevalent disease in Indian bullocks often resulting in death and huge economic losses to farmers. Here, we have reported the use of targeted exome sequencing to identify variants present in horn cancer affected horn mucosa tissue and blood of the same animal to identify some of the prevalent markers of horn cancer.

A six year old cow with growth on the left horn, with foul smell and bleeding was presented to clinics. On clinical examination the horn growth is characterised by granulation tissue at the base of the horn with offensive odour and was spongy, greyish white cauliflower like having rough and verrucous surface and was diagnosed as horn cancer. The horn tumor was removed surgically from the base and the animal was recovered uneventfully. The histopathology of the tumour revealed the squamous cell carcinoma.

The report describes a case of unilateral (right) horn cancer in a humped bullock of age 18 years. The horn was bent downwards and was soft at the base. Radiography in frontal view revealed soft tissue density in the affected cornual sinus compared to air in the normal horn. The affected horn was surgically amputated and the sinuses were thoroughly flushed using suction under general anesthesia. The bullock recovered uneventfully from anesthesia.

Studies were also carried out on digitally-reconstructed radical prostatectomy specimens which showed the inadequacy of the traditional sextant biopsy method. In one study by Chen et al., simulation biopsy strategies were conducted on whole-mount radical prostatectomy specimens from 180 patients and it was found that only 73% of cancers were detected by sextant biopsy (Chen et al., 1997).
