Host plant resistance of cultivars

  • Reniform nematode (Rotylenchulus reniformis) has emerged as one of the most destructive root pathogens of upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) in the United States. Management of R. reniformis has been hindered by the lack of resistant G. hirsutum cultivars; however, resistance has been frequently identified in germplasm accessions from the G. arboreum collection.

  • Fusarium wilt of cluster bean caused by Fusarium solani is an important disease which is known to cause heavy crop loss in Rajasthan as well as in India. During the survey the disease fusarium wilt of cluster bean incidence was recorded from 15.66 to 19.20 per cent at Jaipur, Phulera and Renwal tehsil of Jaipur district and Nawa tehsil of Nagaur district.

  • The soil-borne necrotrophic fungal pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. Ciceris (FOC)infects chickpeaand causes wilt in any stage of plant from seedling to podding. Owing to climate change and ever changing nature of the pathogen, no resistant host cultivar is sustaining long against this disease. Hence, root resident Aspergillus niger isolates as native mycoflora were evaluated as bioagent against the FOC because chemical control has long been discouraged due to its circulation in food chain. In this study, we established the biocontrol potential of organic acid producing A.

  • Evaluation of susceptibility or tolerance of selected major citrus cultivars towards citrus leaf miner, Phyllocnistis citrella stainton (Lepidopters: Gracillaridae) based on innate morphological or physiological attributes in the young expanding citrus leaves were studied in the seedling stage as well as in pre-bearing orchards during spring and winter flushing.

  • The use of resistant cultivars is the most economical and effective method to control late leaf spot (Phaeoisariopsis personata) in groundnut. In the process of breeding for host plant resistance, the plant material is evaluated in the hot spot location under field conditions. But this process of evaluating the whole crop cycle demands lot of labour and time, the disease expression fluctuates with environmental conditions. Here, we present the improved detached leaf assay method for screening groundnut lines under controlled conditions.

  • Keteki joha, one of the most popular aromatic rice variety of our region was found to be resistant towards BB earlier, but is also becoming highly infested by the disease now a days. This may be due to the climatic change which may lead to the evolution of new races of the pathotype which might not exist earlier in Assam. Bacterial blight (BB) caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) is one of the most devastating diseases affecting entire rice acreages. It causes severe yield losses of up to 80% depending on the stage of the crop, cultivar susceptibility, and environmental conditions.

  • Fusarium wilt being caused by a major vascular pathogen of banana and it is difficult to control once it gets colonized. The present study was aimed at screening the potential endophytic bacteria against the Fusarium pathogen. The pathogen was first isolated from the diseased infected plant and morphologically and molecularly confirmed as Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cubense (Foc) and its virulence confirmed. The culturable bacterial endophytes were isolated from the Foc-resistant banana cultivar ‘Yangambi km5’ and Foc-susceptible banana cultivar ‘Ney Poovan’.

  • The present investigation was aimed to understand early infection process and plant pathogen interactions involved in tolerance and susceptibility in groundnut challenged with Sclerotium rolfsii by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The histo-pathological changes were recorded at different time intervals in two groundnut genotypes with differential reaction to stem rot disease viz., Cv: “ICGV 86590” (resistant) and Cv: “Narayani” (susceptible). These genotypes were grown in glass house and challenged with stem rot pathogen.

  • Pulses being important source of protein are essential adjunct to predominantly cereal based diet of large Indian population. Among all major pulses grown in India, pea (Pisum sativum L.) is considered as one of the important pulse crop. Pea diseases are major constraints to pea production in the developing countries. These diseases affects the crop both quantitatively (yield) as well as qualitatively (seed quality). Among these, the rust of pea caused by Uromyces viciae–fabae (Pers.) J. Schrot is considered as most important under warm and humid conditions.

  • Black gram [Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper] is one of the most important grain legumes and attacked by several foliar diseases that cause premature drying of leaves, resulting in reduced black gram yields. An experiment was conducted to find out the stable source of resistance against Anthracnose (Colletotrichum lindemuthianum). Total of six cultivars (PU-30, PU-31, PU-38, PU-40, PUI-94-1 and TAU-1)of Black gram were evaluated under in micro plots in Agronomy farm at Rajasthan college of agriculture, Udaipur during 2013 and 2014 kharif season.

  • One of the major constraints to crop production is the biotic stress which is being caused by various fungi, bacteria and viruses. Successful management of plant disease is mainly dependent on the accurate and efficient detection of plant pathogens, amount of genetic and pathogenic variability present in pathogen population, development of resistant cultivars and deploying of effective resistance gene in different epidemiological region.

  • Identification of defense-related genes in the host is one of the most essential steps in understanding disease resistance mechanisms in plants. In this study, a suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) library was constructed to study differential gene expression in banana plants mediated through a Fusarium wilt pathogen (Fusarium oxysporum f.sp cubense – Foc) and its interaction with the Foc effective biocontrol agent Trichoderma asperellum (prr2). Here cDNAs from the roots of banana cv.
