In the last decade, remarkable advances have been made in bone marrow transplantation (BMT), which is now becoming a powerful tool in the treatment of diseases such as leukemia, aplastic anemia, and congenital immunodeficiency. In animal experiments, it has been found that BMT can be used to treat not only systemic autoimmune diseases but also organ-specific autoimmune diseases. In humans, it has recently been shown that rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn's disease can be successfully treated after BMT.

In this study, we investigate how TNF-α inhibition using a targeted monoclonal antibody affects fracture healing in a TNF-α driven animal model of human rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and elucidate the question whether enduring the anti TNF-α therapy after trauma is beneficial or not.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a long-term, progressive autoimmune disease. It is characterized by synovial hyperplasia leading to swelling, stiffness, and joint deformity in more than one joint. Fibroblast-like synoviocytes are the major cell types that make up the synovial intima structure, which is one of the decisive factors in the development and course of rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common autoimmune disorder that affects around 1% of the world’s population. The associating morbidity extends out of the joints to involve many vital organs in addition to increased mortality rates. Environmental infections are one of the accused elements to be a risk factor for RA. The relationship between RA and toxoplasmosis was a point of controversy where most of the human studies reported either absent or positive correlation.

Micro-RNA (miRNA) are a family of small non-coding ribonucleic acids that inhibits post-transcriptionally the expression of their target messenger RNA (mRNA). We are interested in studying the involvement of miRNA in longevity and autoimmune diseases.

Genetics of autoimmune diseases represent a growing domain with surpassing biomarker results with rapid progress. The exact cause of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is unknown, but it is thought to have both a genetic and an environmental bases. Genetic biomarkers are capable of changing the supervision of RA by allowing not only the detection of susceptible individuals, but also early diagnosis, evaluation of disease severity, selection of therapy, and monitoring of response to therapy. This review is concerned with not only the genetic biomarkers of RA but also the methods of identifying them.

The human genome, which includes thousands of genes, represents a big data challenge. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a complex autoimmune disease with a genetic basis. Many single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) association methods partition a genome into haplotype blocks. The aim of this genome wide association study (GWAS) was to select the most appropriate haplotype block partitioning method for the North American Rheumatoid Arthritis Consortium (NARAC) dataset.

Vascular endothelial growth factor C (VEGF-C) promotes angiogenesis, a prominent feature in rheumatoid synovitis, contributing to the perpetuation of the global burden of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). VEGF-C gene polymorphisms predict the risk of developing various human diseases, such as urothelial cell carcinoma, oral cancer and coronary artery disease.

The Angiopoietin-2 (Ang2) gene encodes angiogenic factor, and the polymorphisms of Ang2 gene predict risk of various human diseases. We want to investigate whether the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the Ang2 gene can predict the risk of rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

In recent years, cell adhesion and cell adhesion molecules have been shown to be important for many normal biological processes, including embryonic cell migration, immune system functions and wound healing. It has also been shown that they contribute to the pathogenesis of a large number of common human disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis and tumor cell metastasis in cancer.

Although group IIA secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2-IIA) is known to be abundantly present in the joints of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), expression of other sPLA2 s in this disease has remained unknown. In this study, we examined the expression and localization of six sPLA2s (groups IIA, IID, IIE, IIF, V and X) in human RA.

We studied the role of monocyte chemoattractant (MCP)-4⁄CCL13 in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). MCP-4 was highly expressed in cartilage from RA patients. Interferon-c significantly stimulated MCP-4⁄ CCL13 production in human chondrocytes, and this effect was enhanced in combination with interleukin-1b or tumor necrosis factor-a.

It has long been an important task to prepare a catalytic antibody capable of digesting a targeting crucial protein that controls specific life functions. Tumor necrosis factor-a(TNF-a) is a cytokine and an important molecule concerned with autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and Crohn’s disease.

Thoracic manifestations of the rheumatic diseases (RDs) are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The five RDs most frequently associated with pleuropulmonary disease are (1) rheumatoid arthritis (RA), (2) systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), (3) progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS), (4) polymyositis/dermatomyositis (PM/DM), and (5) Sjögren syndrome (SS). The clinical presentation is highly variable, ranging from pleuritic pain alone to slowly progressive breathlessness accompanied by cough.

Recently, Th17 cells were identified as a new subset of T helper cells unrelated to Th1 or Th2 cells. They are a subset of T helper cells characterized by IL-17 production, differentiated from naïve T cells in the presence of both transforming growth factor (TGF)-β and IL-6 in mice, and are implicated in the pathogenesis of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) and collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) (Langrish et al. 2005).
