Ebook "Polymeric hydrogels as smart biomaterials" is concerned with polymeric hydrogels, which are considered as one of the most promising types of new polymer-based materials. Each chapter in this book describes a selected class of polymeric hydrogels, such as superabsorbent hybrid nanohydrogels, conducting polymer hydrogels, polysaccharide-based or protein-based hydrogels, or gels based on synthetic polymers.

In this study, the sol-gel method was used for the synthesis of hydrogels based on liquid glass and sodium lignosulfonate. Isopropyl alcohol was used to subsitute water in the hydrogel structure, preventing linear shrinkage and maintaining the water content in the range of 1-4.8%.

We describe the synthesis, characterization and catalytic properties of a series of hybrid materials composed of inorganic plasmonic mono- and bimetallic nanoparticles supported on organic bio-based hydrogel beads. The bimetallic materials showed a localized surface plasmon resonance in the visible region, with a maximum light absorption correlated to the metal composition of the alloyed systems.

The control of the properties and biological activities of chitosan-lysozyme hybrid hydrogels to exploit their interesting biomedical applications depends largely on the chitosan acetylation pattern, a difficult parameter to control. Herein, we have prepared sulfated chitosan-lysozyme hydrogels as versatile platforms with fine-tuned degradability and persistent bactericidal and antioxidant properties.

The prepared hydrogel showed a significant swelling at a ratio of 16 g/g in deionized water. In good accordance with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, a maximum adsorption value of MB onto the hydrogel was achieved 131.58 mg/g.

An experiment was carried out at research farm at T.C.A. Dholi, Muzaffarpur (Bihar) during Spring season of 2016-17, to study the efficacy of hydrophilic polymer on sunflower production. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with 3 replications. The experiment was comprised of a total of 7 hydrophilic combinations,. Sunflower hybrid KBSH-44 was used and among the hydrophilic substrates hydrogel and humic acid were applied @2.5kg/ha, while vermi compost @ 2.5t/ha and fly ash @ 2.0t/ha. Irrigation was provided based on calculation of available soil moisture.

A new class of injectable, biocompatible and biodegradable hydrogel is reported. This hydrogel is derived from N-succinyl chitosan (SCS) mixed with water-soluble dialdehyde starch (DAS) without using a conventional chemical crosslinker. The hybrid hydrogel is formed owing to the Schiff’s base reaction between amine groups of SCS and dialdehyde groups of DAS to form ACH‚NA group. SCS, DAS, and SCS–DAS hybrid hydrogels were synthesized and then characterized by FTIR analysis spectroscopy.

This review presents the past and current efforts with a brief description on the featured properties of hydrogel membranes fabricated from biopolymers and synthetic ones for wound dressing applications. Many endeavors have been exerted during past ten years for developing new artificial polymeric membranes, which fulfill the demanded conditions for the treatment of skin wounds. This review mainly focuses on representing specifications of ideal polymeric wound dressing membranes, such as crosslinked hydrogels compatible with wound dressing purposes.
