Hybrid sorghum genotypes

Sorghum is a staple food of most of the aired zone area people. Therefore, at all India level coordinated research programme was planned for development of hybrid sorghum genotypes having high yield and good nutritional quality parameters and these selected genotypes were grown at Rahuri and Dharwad center during Rabi-2016-2017 for the study.

Heterosis or hybrid vigour is the increased or decreased vigour growth, fitness or yield of a hybrid over the parental values, resulting from the crossing of genetically divers genotype. Heterosis has positive association with specific combining ability (sca) variance. For the development of effective heterosis breeding programme in sweet sorghum, one needs to have information about genetic architecture and estimated prepotency of parents in hybrid combinations.

Sorghum grains are mostly used for the roti preparation. The M 35-1 (Maldhandi) a sorghum cultivar is known for its good quality of roti due to having pearly white grain colour, its flour having higher water holding capacity, and good organoleptic taste. However, this cultivar is low yielder. To evolve sorghum high yielding hybrid genotype coupled with good roti qualities, systematic breeding program was planned and executed to overcome this problem.

Fiteen sorghum genotypes obtained from Sorghum Research Station, VNMKV, Parbhani were screened against Colletotrichum graminicola during Kharif, 2014-15 (flowering stage) at Sorghum Research Station, VNMKV, Parbhani under natural field conditions. Test cultivars were sown during last week of June with a spacing of 45 x 15 cm with three replications. Observations on percent anthracnose disease incidence were recorded 15 days before harvesting of the crop for screening purpose. Sorghum genotypes used for grain production in temperate regions are photoperiod insensitive and flower early avoiding adverse environments during the reproductive phase. In contrast, energy sorghum hybrids are highly photoperiod sensitive with extended vegetative phases in long days, resulting in enhanced biomass accumulation.

The present investigation was under taken for 10 lines and 3 tester using line x tester mating design consisted of 46 entries including 10 lines, 3 testers, 30 hybrids and three checks viz., CSV 23, CSV 27 and CSH25. These were evaluated in RBD with three replications during kharif 2015 in four environments created by using different spacing viz., 22.5 x 5 cm (E1), 30 x 10 cm (E2), 45 x 10 cm (E3) and 60 x 10 cm (E4).
