  • The present investigation entitled “Heterosis Analysis in F1 Hybrids of Bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em. Thell.) Over Environments” was undertaken using ten genetically diverse parents following diallel mating design excluding reciprocals. The resultant 45 F1s and all the ten parents were evaluated in randomized block design with three replications under three different environments created by three dates of sowing [15 November (E1), 1 December (E2), 15 December (E3)]. Sufficient degree of heterosis and heterobeltiosis was observed for all the attributes.

  • Thirty interspecific crosses (including reciprocals) involving three genotypes/varieties of greengram (Vigna radiate (L) Wilczek) cv. HUM 1 HUM 2 & HUM 8 and five genotypes/varieties of blackgram (Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper) cv. T 9, Pant U 19, PDU 1, BHUU 1 & BHUU 91-346-1 were attempted. Nine out of 30 crosses were successful only when greengram was used as seed parents. The crossability ranged from 0.0 to 61.0 per cent. Germination, survival and pod bearing habit of the F1s hybrids were much better in Kharif season as compared to spring/summer season.

  • The SSR technique was used to reveal the genetic diversity among wheat (Triticum aestivum) and its wild relatives and secondly to test the hybridity of wheat (Triticum aestivum) F1s. All the thirteen SSR primers showed 100% polymorphism and except one, all the primers generated unique bands, so these primers can be used for genotype identification. Also four primers showed heterozygous nature of F1s by giving two bands, one from each parent at a particular locus, so these markers can be used for screening purpose also.

  • A study was conducted in castor to estimate the magnitude of heterosis for yield and its eleven yield components. 32 F1 hybrids generated line × tester mating design developed by Kempthorne (1957). These F1S along with 12 parents were evaluated in a randomized block design with three replications at Agricultural Research Station at sansoli, Anand, Gujarat (India).

  • The genetic polymorphism revealed by biochemical markers (protein and isozymes) in plant population have been extensively used to, assess the genetic variability, confirm hybridity of F1s, assure purity of cultivar and establish relationship between species. Electrophoretic protein analysis holds potential utility in breeding programmes of wheat through helping in the unequivocal characterization of varieties used. Sixteen wheat genotypes along with their 32 F1’s were characterized by using protein profile polymorphism in seeds through SDS-PAGE.

  • Hybridization was carried out between highly resistant genotype Meha and four susceptible genotypes viz., Pusa Vishal, GJM-1006, GM-4 and GJM-1008 to deduce genetics of Mungbean Yellow Mosaic Virus (MYMV) resistance in mungbean. Parents, F1s, F2s and F3 progenies were evaluated for their response to MYMV infection utilizing highly susceptible variety GM-4 as an infector row keeping one row of GM-4 after every two rows of parents, F1s, F2s and F3 progenies.

  • The present study comprised of three male sterile CMS lines, three maintainer lines and ten male fertile males (testers/ restorers) with three standard checks in two sets i.e. CMS and conventional thus making 60 F1s (30 CMS and 30 conventional) using Line x Tester mating design. The crosses, CAK 53A x AKH- 07R, CAK 23B x AKH-07R, CAK 23B x DHy286-1R, CAK 23B x R-2000-23 and SRT-1A x R-2000-26 were found better for seed cotton yield per plant and hold promise for further evaluation and commercial exploitation of heterosis both in CMS and conventional system for high yield.

  • Eighteen F1s were generated from line x tester mating design using six parents as lines and three parents as testers during rabi, 2015-16. The F1s along with their parents were evaluated altogether during rabi, 2016-17 for fruit yield and component characters in a randomized block design (RBD) with three replications at the Experimental Farm, Department of Horticulture, Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, Assam.

  • A study of heterosis over checks was carried out with 24 Gosypium hirsutum entries comprising of 14 F1s produced by CMS method, 7 females and 2 males and 1 check were evaluated at three locations viz., Surat, Bharuch and Hansot. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block design (RBD) with three replications. CMS based crosses heterosis over standard check ranged from -39.17 to 9.36 per cent. Three crosses viz., G(B) 20 x G.Cot.10, G(B) 20 x DHY-286-1 and LRK-516 x DHY-286-1 performed better for standard heterosis, where their SCA effects were also significantly higher.

  • The present study in sesame was undertaken to make an assessment of the combined effects of hybridization and ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) on parameters like frequency distribution, skewness and kurtosis of quantitative traits related to productivity in F1M1 generation. Total nine populations (three EMS treated population (F1 1M1), their respective controls (F1s) and three varieties) were grown in a randomized block design (RBD) with three replications during summer, 2017. Observations were taken on traits, viz.

  • The study of heterosis would help in selection of heterotic crosses for commercial exploitation of F1 hybrids in okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench). 45 F1s were developed by crossing 10 elite lines of okra in half diallel fashion during summer 2016. All 45 F1s along with their 10 parents and one standard control (Nunhems hybrid Shakti) were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with three replicates during late kharif (July to October) 2016 at ICAR- Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Babbur Farm, Hiriyur, Chitradurga, Karnataka, India, for heterosis of yield and its components of okra.

  • Five faba bean genotypes (Vicia faba L.) were selfed for two cycles to produce S1 and S2 generations. A half-diallel cross was carried out among them in each level of inbreeding (S0, S1 and S2) to obtain 10 F1 hybrids. Parental materials as well as their respective F1s were evaluated during the winter season of 2012. All studied traits except total dry seed yield showed significant inbreeding depression after the first generation of selfing (S1). No further decrease was noticed at the S2 generation. In the S1 generation the degree of inbreeding depression was highest for No.
